Why Every Witch Hat Atelier Fan Wants Their Own Brushbuddy

While the spring 2026 anime season is packed with several new anime seasons and even debuts, one of the most popular premieres right now is the first season of Witch Hat Atelier. The anime (and acclaimed manga by Kamome Shirahama) follows Coco, a young girl who accidentally discovers how magic works in her world, with tragic results. Hoping to fix her mistakes, she becomes a witch to the compassionate but mysterious witch Qifrey, while learning about the secret world of witches and getting to know her fellow apprentices. However, the world of witches is not all capricious, for evil lurks in the shadows and threatens to destroy the world as Coco knows it.

Fixed Witch Hat Atelier isn't afraid to explore darker themes, especially related to the very corruption that lies at the heart of the magical world, it's still a bright and hopeful anime that's perfect for anime fans of all ages. Fans of Studio Ghibli are also often fans of Witch Hat Atelieras many stories in Studio Ghibli's fantasy films can work with similar atmospheres. Another element that the films and Witch Hat Atelier have in common is their use of whimsical mascot characters; in regard to Witch Hat Atelierthat role belongs to a little creature called Brushbuddy. While Brushbuddy's adventures differ, compared to many of Studio Ghibli's mascots, there are also many similarities that will delight fans of both franchises.

There are countless magical creatures in the world of Witch Hat Ateliereach with its own design and relationship to the people of the universe. For example, rich people can own a Pegasus Carriage, controlled by the legendary flying horses. At the same time, there are also animals that you have to be careful with, such as a territorial and terrifying dragon. Apart from these creatures and many more, a species exclusive to Witch Hat Atelier is the usually docile mammal Brushbuddy, also known as a Brushbug.

Brushbuddies typically have white fur (although they can also have striped or black skins), have very long tails as adults, and small, rodent-like teeth. They are usually quite docile and love being around witches because they love the smell of magic ink. The brushbuddy species can also be found worldwide by Witch Hat Atelierbut are often found in the Dadah Range, like the one Coco encounters during her time in the area. This Brushbuddy later becomes the main mascot of the series, and is seen more often than not with the witches of Qifrey's Atelier.

In episode three of Witch Hat AtelierCoco tries to get along with her strict fellow apprentice, Agott, who is very annoyed with the new arrival. So much so that, according to Agott, Coco must complete a complicated track in the Dadah Range if she wants to remain Qifrey's apprentice. According to Agott, Coco needs to find a Diadem Herb, a plant that only grows on the floating globes scattered around the Dadah Range. The task itself is dangerous to the point of being fatal if not careful, and without Coco's knowledge, Qifrey didn't even plan for her to do this trial; in reality, this mission was planned by Agott herself, formed by her disdain and mistrust of Coco.

During Coco's time in the Dadah Range, she not only devises a brilliant plan to reach the Diadem Rot using whatever magic she has learned so far, but also encounters a Brushbuddy. This little creature, as Coco regains her confidence, is there for her when she decides to put her plan into action, and even “states” that it wants to come home with her. As such, Brushbuddy soon becomes a permanent resident of Qifrey's Atelier and proves to be particularly close to Coco and her friend Richeh. Qifrey also gives Brushbuddy the nickname “PuffPuff”, which it doesn't like very much.

How Brushbuddy relates to Studio Ghibli's mascots

Brushbuddy also inspires wonder and even a sense of support

As fans know very well, Studio Ghibli is known for not only creating films about everyday life (such as The whisper of the heart), but everyday life interacts with fantastic events. A more action-packed example is Spirited Away, as Chihiro finds herself in the spirit world and must find the confidence to save her family and new friends. Although the film has more important mascots, such as No-Face, a secondary type of mascot character is the Soot Sprite, who usually appears with others of his kind to perform tasks. These little creatures are consistently positive in nature and serve as an important support group for the heroes and the good-natured.

At the same time in less action-packed but equally delightfully whimsical films, such as e.g My neighbor Totoro and Kiki's delivery servicemascot characters have been shown to have larger roles. Totoro is the central protagonist and title character of his respective film, and is there for Satsuki and Mei in their time of need.

When their family goes through a rough time, Totoro and his friends are there to bring some joy to their lives, and when things are particularly rocky, the gentle forest spirit is there to help. In comparison, Jiji by Kiki's delivery service is much more snarky and one with a more “glass half empty” world view. But before Jiji loses his ability to talk to Kiki, he still comforts her when she's feeling down. He's also often a source of comedy, like the beloved scene where Jiji finds a mug with a black cat design that looks like him.

IN Witch Hat AtelierBrushbuddy not only displays a sense of adorable whimsy just like Totoro and Jiji, but also that sense of support. When Coco begins to lose hope, Brushbuddy is there to light up her surroundings and join her on the amazing ride. As the series continues (especially in the manga), Brushbuddy continues to travel with his new friends, standing by their side when things get more intense. Like Studio Ghibli's many beloved mascots, Brushbuddy serves as a continuous beacon of comfort and playfulness, an excellent symbol of the heart of Witch Hat Atelierwhich fans new and old absolutely love.
