For a limited time, Steam users can download an indie adventure game completely free until April 25 at 10:00 a.m. PT/1:00 p.m. ET. It's part of Steam's Free-to-Keep campaign, which pushes the game to the top of the local search bar and ensures visibility as an extremely small-scale indie game.
If anyone has taken advantage of the promotion before, they know that the quality of Steam's free game offerings can range from solid to not great. Given its small-scale nature, the latest free game usually only costs $5.99. That's basically nothing in today's economy, but as the old saying goes, free is free.
Which is better? Steam's Free-to-Keep campaign versus the Epic Games Store's weekly free games
The Epic Games Store is known for its free games, but how do they compare to the free games given away on Steam, its biggest competitor?

The free Steam game in question is called SurroundDead Poly Constructiondeveloped and published by indie game developer LivingEveryday. At first glance, its cheesy, playdough-like graphics make games like Human Fall Flat to think about. But it's clearly very different from that game – even on a scale level. In short, SurroundDead Poly Construction is a self-described “open world survival adventure game” focused on solving puzzles, collecting the right items, and defeating all enemies between the player and the final goal.
Played from a third-person perspective, players can collect resources and crafting materials, develop these features to create new elements, and acquire new and improved weapons, equipment, and buildings. By doing so, they have free rein in the indie game's open world, where they also conduct battles (with said items) and solve puzzles. Finally, SurroundDead Poly Construction offers online multiplayer to challenge levels with friends in what is said to be a casual and relaxed atmosphere.
Unfortunately, Surroundhead Poly Construction doesn't seem to be the best received game on Steam's Free-to-Keep campaign. It doesn't yet have enough reviews on the platform to warrant a “rating” from Steam itself, but they seem to be trending negatively. Many accuse it of being an asset flip that plays incredibly similar to the other LivingEveryDay games, and there are a plethora of amateurish technical issues with the game surrounding the .exe file. Compared to other games on Steam's Free-to-Keep campaign, such as Sentience: The Android's Tale or Legend of Keepers: Career of a Dungeon Managerthis game may not quite live up to expectations. Fortunately, these games are still available for a very short time (as of this writing).

Also available via the Steam Free-to-Keep campaign, Sentience: The Android's Tale and Legend of Keepers: Career of a Dungeon Manager are very different games, but both focus on agency. Sentience is a story-driven adventure game where you play as an android in a colony and make decisions that shape relationships and lead to different endings. In the meantime, Legend of Keepers is a rogue-like strategy game where you run a dungeon, hire monsters, set traps, and stop heroes from getting your treasure while managing resources between battles. One is about story and choices, while the other is about strategy and replayability. Both are free for a short time, then SurroundDead Poly Construction will remain free for a while longer.
