God of War Laufey has been a long time coming, as Deborah Ann Woll reveals that she's known the game would happen since 2018. In fact, the version of the game she was pitched seems to be pretty faithful to the final product, as she remembers seeing a poster depicting both Faye and Phranque, the cube.
Speaking at a Game Con Canada panel attended by CGMagazine, Woll was asked about her starring role in the next God of War game. Here we have a few more details, including a better idea of how long God of War Laufey has been on the developer's mind.
Deborah Ann Woll was told she was getting her own God of War game in 2018, but it was in the works long before then
“I've known about this for almost ten years, and I haven't been able to talk about it,” Woll told the crowd at Game Con Canada. “[Cory Barlog] presented it to me in 2018, and they had known about it before then. It's wild.”
Even better, it sounds like Barlog even showed her what would be the cover for God of War Laufey. “When Cory brought me in to talk about making Ragnarok and show me the 2018 game, he already had a poster for the Laufey game with me and a cube. A cube that's been there since the beginning. It's deeply part of the story.”
It backs up what the developers have previously revealed about Laufey's development. Director Ariel Lawrence has said that Phranque had “always” been part of the story, and was one of the “very first things” the team came up with. So he was very much present when Woll heard about the game eight years ago.
This also fits in when the game itself takes place chronologically. We know that it will run concurrently with both God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok, so it makes a lot of sense that the developers got the idea for this game towards the end of the former's development. It also makes sense that they then expanded on Faye's character in Ragnarok – and made sure to bring Woll on board to play Faye both there and in her own game.
God of War Laufey currently has no official release window, but it is expected to be with us sometime next year.
