It seems Xbox gamers have struggled to play their Xbox 360 games, as some Series X owners have been unable to launch their seventh-generation favorites for weeks or even months. The Xbox Backward Compatibility program has been a mostly flawless experience for users over the years; But this latest bump in the road for one of Xbox's most popular features has led to several upset customers.
The Xbox Backwards Compatibility Initiative was launched in 2015 for the Xbox One after fan outcry that the console lacked proper support from the last generation. It originally launched with 104 games, including some Xbox-heavy hits like Gears of War and Mass effectwith a promise to continue growing the program over time. Since then, the number of games in the program has grown to a whopping 632 games for the Xbox 360 and 63 for the original Xbox. Unfortunately, the Xbox Backward Compatibility program ended in 2021, citing licensing issues as the major obstacle preventing the team from doing more. But at GDC 2026, Microsoft announced that it would be bringing back Xbox's backwards compatibility program in some capacity later this year.
Xbox fans haven't been able to play classic Xbox 360 games for months
Unfortunately, Xbox's backwards compatibility program has backfired, as users on Reddit and on social media have reported that they can't access their Xbox 360 library on their Xbox Series X consoles, citing a connection error with Xbox Live. Affected players say their internet connection is working fine and their Xbox Series X games are working without issue. The problems only start when players launch an Xbox 360 title. However, it does not appear that all players are affected in the same way; some report that no Xbox 360 games work for them at all, while others report that some games work while others do not. Xbox Support has issued an official statement on social media saying that the team is actively investigating why some users are unable to play “select backwards compatible Xbox 360 games”.
Users in the comments sections of both X and Reddit state that this has been going on for some time, with some users affected as far back as November, but there seems to be an explanation as to why this is happening. In a Reddit thread, user GR1NTER shared a support message from Xbox claiming that newer consoles likely have problems playing Xbox 360 games because they haven't yet established a network link for rights control and content delivery. Basically, newer consoles are not yet validated on the right servers and are more prone to problems than older consoles that have already been established on those servers. As of this writing, this has not been confirmed as an official explanation, and the issue remains unresolved.
What we can explain is that Xbox 360 backwards compatible games rely on legacy Xbox 360 services for rights control and content delivery, and newly purchased Series X consoles must newly establish these connections during initial setup.
This is why this mainly affects newer consoles, while older or previously configured consoles, where these services were already validated, may continue to work as expected. We understand the importance of this feature and want to strongly assure you that this is recognized as a service issue and treated as a priority. We really appreciate you reporting this and helping to bring the issue to light.
The ongoing issues with Xbox's Backward Compatibility program can be very disappointing, given that it is one of the console's best features. Despite all of Xbox's controversial decisions among its fan base in recent years, backwards compatibility remains a key reason why Xbox fans love their Series X and S consoles. But since the Xbox Series X hasn't been selling very well lately, it's easy to see how this problem has gone on for so long. Established Series X or S owners who have taken advantage of the backwards compatibility program have likely been doing so for some time now without issue, with no cause for concern as they are not affected. Meanwhile, those who may have just bought a new console may have had issues with their Xbox 360 libraries, but have fallen by the wayside due to their low numbers and thus let this problem slip under the radar.

Regardless of where Xbox fans fall, it's troubling that this issue hasn't been resolved yet. Many Xbox fans are now effectively locked out of their Xbox 360 libraries until a fix is released. The Xbox community's various workarounds and fixes have only been found to work to some extent, and not for everyone. Hopefully, Xbox owners who want to jump back into gaming that Gears of War or Lost Odyssey won't have to wait too much longer to access their games again.
