Xbox Might Shut Down Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian

Fallout: New Vegas, Avowedand The external worldDeveloper Obsidian Entertainment could be shut down in the near future, should negotiations with Xbox not go in the studio's favor. While everything about Xbox's planned “reset” is terrifying and equally surprising, Obsidian is a strange choice given how many games it has produced since the acquisition, to say nothing of its prestige as the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas.

Obsidian Entertainment is one of Xbox's previous acquisitions during its late 2010/early 2020 shopping spree. Microsoft acquired it under the Xbox Game Studios banner in 2018, after which it was released Avowed, The Outer Worlds 2, Pentiment, Grounded, and Grounded 2 (released on PS5 in August). Obsidian evolved Fallout: New Vegasthe best Fall-out game of all time, and many fans have wanted Obsidian/Bethesda/Xbox to give the studio another shot at the IP. But whether it is on the table or not is hard to say.

Avowed, Grounded Developer Obsidian is reportedly working on 4 new games, and I can't wait

Xbox's Obsidian Entertainment could have four more games in the works, giving fans of Grounded, Avowed and other popular RPG series new hope.

Obsidian has been added to the list of potential shutdowns by Xbox Game Studio

According to a recent report from The Game Business, Compulsion, Ninja Theory, Double Fine, Obsidian Entertainment and Undead Labs are all in negotiations with Microsoft and Xbox to avoid closure. This is the first report to mention Obsidian Entertainment, while the other studios have been picked up by other outlets and reports. More negotiations are reportedly also underway at other studios. “The effect of this is likely to reverberate throughout the business,” the report says. New Xbox CEO Asha Sharma recently announced tough times ahead for Xbox, adding that the business aims to invest in its biggest games and IPs, as opposed to other projects. Fall-out and The Elder Scrolls were two of the IPs specifically mentioned as needing more investment.

Interestingly, director Josh Sawyer of Obsidian Entertainment recently spoke about working on a new Fallout game. On the question of working on a new one Fallout: New Vegas “sequel,” which he and everyone at Obsidian is no doubt constantly asked, he responded with, “That's not up to me.” Instead, he referred to “titans” in charge of IPs and making that decision, and yet it hasn't shown up. Obsidian Entertainment has no currently announced games, but whether or not it's secretly working on a Fallout game is unknown, perhaps even more unlikely if the aforementioned report is true. According to Sawyer, a new Fall-out the game would more or less be awarded, if that were to happen, because that's “that's what happened to New Vegas.”

obsidian entertainment plans to last 100 years

Overall, no one wants to see studios shut down. Obsidian Entertainment has produced great games, even if the commercial aspect hasn't always been as successful as it could have been. Compulsion Games released South of midnight and has previously been said to represent a different aspect of Xbox's portfolio than pure profit. Ninja Theory just announced Senua Undead Labs has been working on a 2027 release State of decay 3and Double Fine is a legendary name.

Some reports suggest that these studios may have ways to spin out, keep their name and buy themselves out of Xbox, so to speak, depending on negotiations and interested buyers. But such decisions take time, and if recent moves from Xbox are any indication, it appears that time is running out.
