Windrose reveals roadmap for 2026, confirms first major update is called Ashlands

The development team behind Windrose has begun revealing its roadmap for 2026, including telltale signs of the first major content and story update. A pirate-themed open-world survival RPG that has taken Steam by storm in recent weeks, Windrose still has a lot to reveal to its ever-growing player base, and early updates are expected soon.

Launched in Early Access on Steam on April 14th, Windrose has impressed early players with its sea-themed battles, rich world design, settlement growth and more. Windrose has already hit some impressive player milestones, with an all-time high of more than 222,000 concurrent players, and the reception has been pretty great to boot, with the game holding 88 percent player approval among the more than 16,000 reviews remaining on Steam.

Windrose posts plans for future updates

Although its early access was released recently, Windroses development team at Kraken Express are far from resting on their laurels and are already sharing plans for the game's first round of updates. Part of that plan includes a major content update, which likely won't arrive until late October at the earliest, but Kraken Express has promised that its ambitions are high to deliver on the game's ever-evolving story. Not much can be revealed at this early stage, but a wealth of information is ready to be revealed Windroses open world will receive at least one new biome, called the Ashlands. Kraken Express also wants to see major development of the game, so players will have to be patient to see what else is in store, although the developer's update says they'll only have to wait a month or two for more information.

Before the big content update can happen, there is still a lot of housekeeping to be done, which the developers plan to handle through smaller updates that will come much sooner. Some features that will need to be adjusted apply Windroseperformance, stability, connectivity, and CPU and disk usage, along with more than 50 planned quality of life changes. Players should also expect to see improvements Windroses crafting and building system, as more than 40 new building parts are slated to be released to “fill some gaps and inconsistencies.” The developers have also identified issues with some Steam Cloud saves and are currently working on a fix. It is likely that the development team will be looking for some players to test the features of the minor updates in the near future.

Kraken Express has already used player feedback to drive its upcoming updates, and a new tool has now been introduced that will give players a better direct line to the development team. The new windrose.support system is currently live in beta but should support more features in the future, allowing for the reporting of troubleshooting issues and game bugs. It will also provide a platform for the players to share ideas that can change Windrose for the better, and users will even be able to vote on other players' suggestions to encourage the developers to implement them.

The developer update did not mention plans to include Windrose to PS5 or other platforms, so fans should expect it to be available exclusively through Steam for the foreseeable future. Previous comments from Kraken Express have indicated that there is an interest in expanding to the console market, but the team would like to get the game through its 1.0 update at least before moving forward.
