Until Dawn Remake Drops to 'Mixed' Reviews on Steam

Important takeaways

  • Till Dawn's remaster (or remake, however you want to slice it) launched yesterday on PC and PS5.
  • Fans have called out that the new edition looks worse than the original and has some weird changes.
  • This has bled over to the game's Steam page, which currently sits with “Mixed” reviews.

Until Dawn's remaster has dropped to “Mixed” reviews on Steam, with negative reviews criticizing the PSN requirements, different soundtrack, and poor optimization.

While Until Dawn is by far the most popular game in Supermassive's choice-based library, it's one that many were surprised to see get a re-release. That trepidation about an “unnecessary” remaster doesn't seem to have subsided as much now that the game is actually out, as many fans have pointed out, it's surprisingly worse in some key areas.

Since the game's launch yesterday, Until Dawn fans have criticized the remaster for looking worse than the original in a number of ways, pointing out missing features, things that have changed negatively, and a bunch of other things. This negative reception has perhaps unsurprisingly spread to the game's Steam page, which isn't looking too hot right now.

Until Dawn opens to frosty 'mixed' reviews on Steam

As pointed out by UnsafeBody on the Until Dawn subreddit, the Until Dawn remaster is currently sitting with a “Mixed” response on Steam, with many of the reviews pointing to some of the game's issues. One of the biggest problems many players are having right now is one that will be familiar to Helldivers 2 players – the infamous PSN login requirement.

Despite not being an online game, Until Dawn requires a PlayStation Network account to log in, something that Steam players absolutely hate and have roasted pretty much every PlayStation game that has come to the platform to require it. Many of the negative reviews for Until Dawn so far have suggested that this is the main cause of irritation, which comes as no surprise.

Beyond that, the reviews point to a number of problems with the remaster. Some of them are based on the content of the new edition, such as the removal of “Oh Death” from the game, the changes in the lighting, the strange new aspect ratio that comes from introducing black fields on the screen, and more. It seems that the complaints that the remaster “looks worse” than the original are also felt by PC gamers.

Until Dawn's remaster adds at least a new ending that seems to tease a sequel of some sort. Firesprite are rumored to be the ones working on a potential second game, but we'll have to wait to find out more.

Perhaps the biggest problem Steam players have with Until Dawn, however, is its poor optimization. Many of the reviews point to progression bugs, soft locks, crashes, and screen dropouts as consistent issues, suggesting that PC might not be the best place to play the re-release. Here's hoping some of these issues are resolved soon.
