Today marks the end of an era for Destiny 2

Today, June 9, 2026, officially marks the end of ongoing live service support for Destiny 2. After receiving continuous updates for almost 9 years, Sony has made the decision to shut down active development of Destiny 2 after the last update goes live, although the game will remain playable in maintenance mode for the foreseeable future. For the game's most loyal fans, this is undoubtedly a devastating blow, as even many of those who have had a complicated relationship with it have admitted that a world without it is a difficult reality to accept.

Even so, Bungie seems to be doing everything in its power to ensure Destiny 2 goes out with a bang. Monument of Triumph, the game's final defining patch, looks set to be one of the most comprehensive updates it has ever received, with a slew of new content and quality-of-life improvements that players have been asking for for years. When it goes live on the hour Destiny 2weekly reset, players will likely have plenty to keep them busy, but for many fans, that's still not enough. The general feeling around the game seems to be that it would be much better if it never needed the Monument of Triumph to begin with.

Saying goodbye to Destiny 2

Saying goodbye to Destiny 2 is the hardest thing I will ever do in gaming

Saying goodbye to Destiny 2 hurts because I'm not just leaving a game behind, but a version of my life that I can never return to.

Destiny 2's Live-Service Support era has come to an end

Destiny 2 launched on September 6, 2017, and it felt like the franchise finally got the fresh start it needed. The first one Fate had become a much better game by the end of its life, but it also took a long time to get there. Destiny 2 was intended for Bungie to take everything it had learned from the first three years and build a sequel that could move the series forward in a much more satisfying and accessible way.

However, that didn't exactly happen, at least not right away. Destiny 2 had a stronger campaign and a smoother launch than the first game, but once players reached the endgame, many of the flaws began to show. The loot dried up too quickly, and because of that, the game didn't give players a good reason to keep coming back. Destiny 2's Forsaken expansion eventually changed that, giving the game one of its best campaigns and the kind of content that made players feel excited about its future again. Beyond Light later became another major turning point, ushering in a darker era that brought Destiny 2 closer to history it would eventually be remembered for.

But now, all the work, all the time and energy put into it Destiny 2 turning it into what is widely regarded as one of the best live service games ever made has led the series to a dark, empty future, without Destiny 3 in sight and little reason to keep playing beyond what Monument of Triumph brings to the game. To be clear, it's not being taken offline, and Bungie has confirmed that the game will remain playable after active development ends. However, Monument of Triumph is still the last live service content update for Destiny 2which means the version of the game that players have known for nearly nine years is coming to an end. After today, Destiny 2 may still be there, but it will no longer progress in the same way.

Destiny 2's Monument of Triumph update is one last reason to come back

At least the Monument of Triumph gives Destiny 2 one last great moment before that future arrives. Bungie has intentionally designed the update as a tribute to everything Guardians has accomplished during the game's active development. Monument of Triumph is available to all players, brings back and updates several parts of the game and is meant to leave Destiny 2 in a better place for anyone who wants to return after active development ceases. It obviously doesn't soften the blow completely, but it gives players one last reason to log in and spend time in a game that has meant so much to so many people.

Although it has not always been pleasant, Destiny 2 has survived by giving players something else to look forward to. Even during the worst stretches, there was usually another expansion, another raid, another season, or another major change somewhere ahead. But with the Monument of Triumph, that changes. Players can still log in after June 9, 2026, but they will be logging into a game that no longer has anything new waiting for them after the final update. Once a game that spent nearly a decade begging players to keep coming back, Destiny 2 has finally reached the end of the road.
