They said the game was over, but they were wrong. Some titles just refuse to stop, roll out surprise content and patches long after their dev's promised the end. Take no man's sky, which has added the entire new system year after launch, or Cyberpunk 2077, and still get meaningful updates even after its official final note.

The best Playstation 4 games of all time
Each of these PS4 games is a must-game.

Heck, Dragon Age: Veilguard even dropped free weapons packaging months after Bioware had moved on. These are more than live titles. They are proof that some games are just moving on.
No man's heaven

Hello Games has expelled 30+ large free updates (from Atlas Rises and base building to Aquarius Fishing Review 2024) Since the game's rocky launch in 2016. After logging 200 hours, I can confirm that scraping of foreign fish from my linen in zero pregnancy is strangely satisfactory. This ongoing development is not really a patchwork. It's more like a transformation. The game is very different from when it first came out, although it was supposed to be technically “finished” at the launch. This is a game that just refuses to disappear.
Starwars: Empire at War
Released in 2006 and technically “done”, Petroglyph and Community Modders have continued to update this RTS for 17+ years and added updates such as 64-bit support and multiplayer maps. The last of these updates came out October 2024. It's a bit wild to see this game still thrive on Steam. These patches keep the game forward, even though they are approaching 20 years. Perhaps most important of all is that this game still works on modern computers, which is a bit of an performance in itself.

City of Heroes was closed by NCSoft in 2012, but this beloved superhero MMO continued only on private servers. Then, in January 2024, Ncsoft officially licensed the fan-run homecoming team. This means that everything that went on on the private servers now has full legal support.

Originally a platform player in the mid-2000s, this cult classic received a surprising steam publishing 2017, and Devs sent HD structures, a 64-bit building, bug fixes and a mod kit as late as April 2024. Sure, it's a very niche game, but you have to give them some credit. There are not many games from the 2000s that still work on computers. The fact that the team still supports it (probably for minimal revenue) is proof that some games are passion projects first and profit in second place.

This Hack-and-Slash RPG received a robust anniversary edition Review 2016, ten years after it was released in 2006. Then it ran a new DLC drop in 2021. There are new classes, assignments and quality of life adjustments that still appear fifteen years after launch. This game is not just alive. It has become a complete RPG that you can argue to exceed newer items in the genre. It's just not still playable. It still gets better.

Cyan Worlds lost a surprise “Rime” world update in March 2025, which added that new content that was originally designed in 2000 but left from the 2020master. As someone who has played this mysterious classic over VR and desk, discovering a brand new island with fresh Lore felt like discovering a lost chapter decades later. Myst is proof that even a three decades old puzzle game can still surprise you. It was one of the last games I thought would still get updates at this time.

Originally released in 2009, Resident Evil 5 appeared as a closed chapter, until PC players received an out-of-the-blue update in February 2023 (which restored the beloved Split-Screen Co-OP mode 14 years later). The re -race lets players sprint through Africa with a friend lying on the sofa next to them. The return of the function was both nostalgic and a genuine surprise.

Blood colored launched in 2019 but continued to roll out 7 new updates until May 2024 and add new characters and verse modes. These updates felt a lot like New Questline, not just quality of life. It deepened replayability rather than just fixing bugs. Of course, this game is a bit of a passion project for Koji “Igavania” Igarashi. This type of support highlights what happens when this passion meets a society that really loves this game.
Red

Arkane Austin's vampire shooter struck in May 2023 and seemed clear, but in May 2024, “One last” update added DLSS, single player's break and a great review to the core systems. I dropped in for a playback and was beaten by how much smoother and more polished it felt, despite its rocky reception. Technically, this game was already “clear”, but this surprise update helped fix some of the problems that players experienced.
Sonic Dream Team
Sega promised three DLC updates and delivered on these updates after the Sonic Dream Team was released in December 2023. Four more free content falls sank at the end of 2024. Highlights? Time attempts, boss renamed, a sweet dream world, shade as a playable character and secret challenges. My speedrun-focused friend logged over 60 hours chased each medal, and each update gave a new reason to start it. Although this game is still very new, it still delivers updates that were not expected.
