Backrooms is the latest film to come from esteemed distributor A24. It follows a furniture store owner who discovers a hidden door that leads him to “an endless stretch of rooms.” It is then up to his therapist to save him.
The backrooms concept is deeply rooted in internet lore, beginning as a creepypasta 4Chan post before being adapted for YouTube by creator Kane Parsons. This launched a series of spin-offs, including several video games and the A24 film, directed by Parsons himself.
After being out for a few days now, the Backrooms movie seems to have rekindled interest in the creepypasta, as a couple of games based on it have seen a huge influx of players.
Two games based on the backrooms of Creepypasta have seen the return of players
Two Backrooms-centric games have benefited from the release of Parsons' new film: Escape the Backrooms and Backrooms: Escape Together.
According to SteamDB, just five hours ago, Backrooms: Escape Together, a game first released in 2022, just hit its highest number of concurrent players ever. Before that, Escape Together peaked at 4,965 players in October 2024. Five hours ago, that number was 56 players below 9,000.
The co-op title, which gives players the chance to “Travel through 11 procedurally generated levels, using what's available to survive and go deeper into the Backrooms”, has received glowing reviews and has a positive score of 86.81 percent on Steam.
A second game, Escape The Backrooms, has itself seen an influx of players.
While it hasn't quite reached the heights it did eight months ago, when 48,879 players played together, the 16,614 who played last night is the highest it has been in 2026. Like Escape Together, Escape The Backrooms has received critical acclaim from audiences, with a positive score of 89.3 percent from over 140,000 reviews.
These developers have a lot to thank Parsons for.
