After the huge success of One Piece live-action series Netflix brings another giant to the live-action format, and this time it's about giant robots fighting each other. Finally, more concrete news was revealed about Mobile Suit Gundam live action movie.
This project was announced in 2018, but Netflix officially became involved in it only in 2021. Due to so many years of silence and rumors, it feels like the production had many ups and downs before finally landing Jim Mickle (Sweet tooth) as director and promote the project. There is still no release date, but this Gundam the film is already in production in Queensland, Australia.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's counterattack sequel finally gets a new trailer
Ahead of its US theatrical release on May 15th, fans are getting a new look at the film Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe.
Sydney Sweeney stars in New Gundam Live-Action
Netflix has just revealed the cast of the live-action film adaptation of Mobile Suit Gundamwith Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria) and Noah Centineo (street fighter) participates in the production. According to an official press release, the film will feature an entirely new story set in the midst of a decades-long space war. That means the movie will likely try to follow suit Gundams tradition of portraying an anti-war message. Legendary Pictures is producing the film.
Another classic element that will be back in the film is space colonies: the official plot described in the same press release says that the story will feature rival mecha pilots who have joined opposing forces in the war. It also specifically mentions that the war is between Earth and former space colonies, which actually seems very much in line with the first Gundam anime. This will be the third Gundam installment with a female lead; the first was Gundam: The Witch from Mercuryfollowed by Gundam GQuuuuux.
This means that Sweeney and Centineo will likely be the main rivals in history. Maybe the movie will include some references to Gundam 0079but it seems likely to take place in a whole new timeline/universe (although it feels like we might see an entity called the Earth Federation). In fact, setting a new chronology would be the safest option for this production, as it gives more freedom to the writers and would also easily allow for potential sequels or prequels without the constraints of a previously established timeline. What remains to be revealed is if both sides of the war will employ Gundams, or if, just like in the original anime, only one side will have the upper hand.
While no character names have been revealed, they did announce many actors in addition to Sweeney and Centineo:
-
Jackson White (Tell me lies);
-
Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool & Wolverine);
-
Nonso Anozie (Sweet tooth);
-
Michael Mando (Best to call Saul);
-
Javon “Wanna” Walton (Under the bridge);
-
Oleksandr Rudynskyi (The agency);
-
Ida Brooke (Dune: Part Three);
-
Gemma Chua-Tran (Heartbreak High);
-
Jason Isaacs (The white lotus).
Taking Gundam to “Real Life” for the second time
While many may be surprised by this production, it is actually the second time the franchise has delivered a Japanese-American live-action film. In 1999, a live-action film produced by PoleStar Entertainment (under the supervision of Sunrise) titled G-Saviour was released. It takes place in the Universal Century, centuries after the events of Gundam 0079. It got a mild reception, but it also didn't have nearly the scale of this one, which is a of many bold moves the franchise has made recently.
The original Mobile Suit Gundam is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
