GOG and Square Enix have teamed up to bring a quartet of amazing games to PC. All four are integral parts of Square's long-running SaGa series, an often underrated and more experimental branch of the JRPG giant's ongoing output.
SaGa Frontier Remastered adds another layer of color and some cool new content to a 1998 classic. Romancing SaGa 2 and Romancing SaGa 3 are excellent strategy-centric titles with great twists on turn-based combat, although it's worth noting that this is the original RS2, rather than its fantastic 2024 remake. Finally, there's SaGa: Scarlet Grace, the latest original entry on this list, which debuted in 2016 for the PlayStation Vita before moving on to a host of other devices.
Take my advice, give Scarlet Grace a chance
All four games are on sale now through May 4th at some great discounts. SaGa Frontier Remastered is half-off, while the other three are 70 percent off. Keep in mind that these are all pretty cheap games at this point – even when it hits full price, SaGa Frontier will only cost $24.99. But the deep discounts are worth noting, as Scarlet Grace, for example, is currently $8.99 (down from $29.99 when the sale ends).
Let me say a little about Scarlet Grace here. It is excellent. It will almost certainly frustrate beginners. It can be a brutally hard JRPG. But when it clicks, it really clicks. I still prefer it to 2024's quasi-sequel, Emerald Beyond (which is pretty good). SaGa have always worn their experimental, mechanically heavy, brands with pride, and Scarlet Grace feels like the culmination of that unapologetic hardcore vibe.
As for the rest, I really enjoyed my time with SaGa Frontier Remastered when I reviewed it for Nova Crystallis back in 2021. Romancing SaGa 3 is a great experience, but I'd personally recommend Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven over the original. It's a great remake. Still, it's great to see OG pop up as part of GOG's Game Preservation Program. I'm sure there are SaGa fanatics out there who prefer it for one reason or another.
