Barring something Team Asobi has been holding back as a big surprise – I certainly wouldn't put it past them – Astro Bot isn't getting any more DLC. There will be more merch, though, and a year and a bit on from the release of the 2024 game, PlayStation has just revealed the best Astro Bot action figure I've ever seen.
The reveal was saved for the end of a PlayStation Japan video that focused mostly on Katamari. But right at the end of the video, one of the presenters is shown sitting next to a previously undiscovered Astro Bot figure created by PlayStation and Bandai Spirit's Tamashii Nations. It features a shiny toy Astro holding on to the Dual Speeder he uses to fly around the galaxy.
Keep releasing Astro Bot Merch and I'll keep buying it
While Astro himself has been transformed into various characters thanks to the success of Astro's Playroom and Astro Bot – he has his own Funko Pop and a very popular Nendoroid – this is the first time the Dual Speeder has been taken out of the game and turned into a tangible item that Astro Bot fans can purchase.
That doesn't include the Astro Bot controls, which are based on the Dual Speeder, but because of how awkward they would be to hold, they couldn't go all the way
The Dual Speeder appears to sit in a holder, which not only makes it look like Astro is using it to fly, but also suggests that it can be removed, played with, and displayed in other ways. The presenter doesn't bring it up or touch it, and honestly, I don't blame her. If I were tasked with something like that, I would inevitably drop the figure almost immediately.
Since the Dual Speeder is depicted as being in mid-flight, its handles are open with jets coming out of them – that's the main reason the controls couldn't be exact copies of Astro's intergalactic transport game mode. My favorite part, though, is where you find the touchpad on your DualSense. That's where you'll find the Dual Speeder's eyes, and on the figure, its expression changes depending on the angle you're looking at it.
While the Dual Speeder is the main event, the Astro that the figure comes with looks like it might be the most detailed we've seen yet. The figure has a see-through visor rather than his face just being printed or painted on, and it's much shinier than the Nendoroid equivalent.
The only caveat at the moment is that no further details beyond its brief surprise reveal during a Katamari video have been revealed. There is a chance that the figure will end up being exclusively available in Japan. If so, there will be ways to get it shipped elsewhere, but that will just add to the cost of what I assume will already be a pretty expensive collector's item.
