Calling everything “perfect” is bound to upset every negative Nancy on the planet, because God forbid we ever be optimistic or positive about anything, but I digress. Still, Final Fantasy 7 Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi said about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirths combat in a recent interview with Eurogamer that the team believed they had already “perfected” the game's hybrid combat system. But he then wisely balanced that feeling with the realization that, because Final Fantasy 7 Revelation essentially copying that system without any meaningful improvements would result in something that arguably felt “stale…offering nothing new or refreshing.” To his point, he is absolutely right, but that is also why the team behind it Final Fantasy 7 Revelation takes the final installment's battle to a place I feel the trilogy could have been from the start.
While the rhythm and flow of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirths combat feels truly incredible, there is always room for improvement – even in things that in our eyes are already perfect. It's there Final Fantasy 7 RevelationFunctionally Integrated Tactical Suitwear, or “FITS,” systems come in, which, humorously, is almost exactly what it sounds like. No doubt modeled after Gen Z's iconic lingo, FF7 RevelationThe FITS system is based on the outfits the characters are wearing at any given time. Even at first glance, it already sounds more liberating than anything else Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth offered in battle, despite being awesome as it is.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's FITS battle system unlocks rebirth
Before you get into the how Final Fantasy 7 Revelation improves Remake the battle of the trilogy, it is at least worth acknowledging what FF7 Rebirth did so well that Hamaguchi was willing to call it perfect. Rebirth took the already impressive hybrid system from Remake and made each member of their party feel like a completely unique tool built for a specific situation. Cloud was the obvious all-rounder – as usual – Barret could safely pressure enemies from a distance, Tifa could turn a staggered opponent into a rapidly depleting health bar, and characters like Yuffie, Red XIII and Cait Sith each brought their own weird little combat mechanics to the battlefield. Constantly switching between them never felt too taxing or unnecessary either, as building ATB across the party naturally encouraged players to use all of them instead of picking Cloud and pretending the other two characters were simply there for moral support.

The addition of Synergy Skills and Synergy Abilities i Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth only strengthened that design by making party composition all the more important. There was a satisfying rhythm to blocking, dodging, exploiting weaknesses, pressuring an enemy, and then unleashing every available ability when the wobble meter finally broke, and Rebirth somehow allowing all of this to feel tactical without forcing the action to come to a complete halt every few seconds. It was flashy, strategic, and wonderfully chaotic all at once, which is probably about as close to “perfect” as realtime gets Final Fantasy combat system has ever come. Yet perfection does not necessarily mean finality, and RevelationThe FITS system looks to give Square Enix an opportunity to preserve everything Rebirth got it right at the same time as character building and experimentation were made significantly more flexible.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's FITS combat system is the definition of freedom
According to Hamaguchi in the Eurogamer interview, one of the main reasons why Square Enix chose to use the FITS system in FF7 Revelation is due to an error in Rebirths battle – even though it was “perfect” in his eyes. The bug was that, because playable characters in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth already filling specific roles, players were significantly less free to choose the party composition they wanted when encounters called for something a little more curated. “I guess you're guided to choose certain characters in certain situations,” Hamaguchi said, stressing that the system, as good as it really was, “didn't really offer that freedom of choice when it comes to character selection.” Final Fantasy 7 RevelationThe FITS system is the answer to that problem.
The way it works is that each character i FF7 Revelation have access to four unique outfits that, when worn, change the character's role and abilities in battle. Classic Final Fantasy games called these “Jobs” – a system that has gone down in history as one of the series' most celebrated mechanics. Posts like Final Fantasy 5, Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy X-2and Final Fantasy 12: Zodiac Age often praised specifically for how much experimentation their job system allows, and now it seems Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will offer just that.
RevelationThe FITS system looks to give Square Enix an opportunity to preserve everything Rebirth got it right while character building and experimentation were made significantly more flexible.
That's not to say that every implementation of the Jobs system has been perfect, but the basic concept is hugely popular because it makes gear, abilities, and party building feel transformative. A character doesn't just get better numbers, as changing jobs can fundamentally change what they contribute in battle. In essence, it is Final Fantasy 7 Revelations FITS system works, where the clothes effectively act as a modern, character-specific interpretation of Final Fantasys traditional job, changes combat capabilities while preserving the action-oriented system Rebirth already established.
Now, if Final Fantasy 7 Revelation can pull this off well, then longtime fans of the series who are constantly begging for it to bring back the classic Jobs system will have the best kind of glory days – I know I will. Experimenting in an RPG is something I always want more of, because it makes me feel like I actually have a say in how I play, which of course is one of the most important qualities of an RPG. Also, as someone who is practically obsessed with cosmetics in games, it's just a bonus that the appearance of my characters will also affect their combat role in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is scheduled to be released in Spring 2027. It will launch simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Rebirth may have perfected the flow of Final Fantasy 7 Remake battle of the trilogy, but RevelationThe FITS system The FITS system could finally perfect the freedom that surrounds it, allowing players to bring the characters they actually want into battle rather than the ones an encounter seemingly demands. At that point, Square Enix wasn't necessarily going to replace what worked in the Rebirthbut simply remove the limitations that kept combat from being as flexible as it was fun.
