PlayStation may be planning changes to trophies

PlayStation may be planning some changes to the trophy system, according to a new survey from Sony currently doing the rounds. Although the PlayStation Trophy system has been around for three console generations, the new survey could give users more control over which feats to display.

Since its launch in 2020, the PS5 has continuously added new features for gamers to use. In a May 2026 firmware beta update, Sony quietly revealed a player count tracking widget for the console's Welcome Hub. The player count widget would be split into a trending tab that tracks games by playtime and a top 10 tab that shows weekly player counts for different titles. Given that the feature is still in beta, it remains to be seen when PlayStation's new player count widget will be ready for a full release.

PlayStation is conducting a survey on trophies

As more players collect platinum trophies in various PlayStation titles, Sony has reportedly sent out a new survey for users to fill out. After earning a trophy, users can see a prompt at the top right of the screen asking how satisfied they are with trophies. After responding to the popup, an email will be sent to the user shortly thereafter. The survey includes some options to agree or disagree with specific questions, along with some open-ended boxes asking how the PlayStation trophy experience can be improved. As of this writing, it's unclear how long Sony's new survey will last, so users who are prompted to respond should do so when given the chance.

The potential redesign of the PlayStation trophies could follow what Microsoft has done for the Xbox's achievement system. In April 2026, Microsoft stated that players would have more control over Xbox achievements, including a profile highlight when 100% of a game's achievements are unlocked. Additionally, Xbox players can hide games from their profile, which has been one of the most requested changes from users over the years. Games hidden in this way will have no impact on a user's Gamerscore.

The news of the PlayStation trophy investigation came during a busy week for Sony and its customers. As of May 20, the cost of PlayStation Plus was increased due to ongoing global market conditions. PlayStation Plus Essential received a $1 price increase, from $9.99 to $10.99 per month. In addition, the monthly price of PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers increased by $2 each, to $16.99 and $19.99 per month, respectively. The PlayStation Plus price hikes come a month after the PS5 saw price hikes across the board. Currently, the PS5 digital edition costs $599.99, which is a $100 increase from the previous price tag of $499.99.

However, Sony will soon get a chance to show off what it has been working on. State of Play on June 2nd will give users a look at upcoming PS5 titles, such as Marvel's Wolverine. Given that the upcoming presentation will last over an hour, it stands to reason that some new PS5 console features like a revamped trophy system could be covered. But it remains to be seen what Sony's plans are for the June 2 broadcast.
