All over the internet you'll find people still angry and upset about PlayStation's departure from physical media. Wolverine's latest trailer was dominated by angry comments calling for the discs to be returned, while all of PlayStation's Twitter posts have also been pretty comfortable with angry fans.
Even some high-profile industry figures have spoken out against the move, such as former Sony CEO Shawn Layden. Not everyone agrees with the decision, and now we can add Nier Automata director Yoko Taro to the ever-growing pile.
Even Nier Automata's Director Is Sad About PlayStation Killing Fortnite
Over the weekend, Taro posted a tweet about how he had received a physical copy of Hi-Fi Rush, saying that people shouldn't “assume your parents and physical media will always be there” and to grab the physical media as soon as they can if they want them.
After that, Taro delved a little deeper into his personal feelings about the PlayStation getting rid of discs, saying that he feels “sad” about them going away and that he thought limited editions with physical copies would have become more normal instead.
“Personally, I can't help but be sad that physical media is going away, but I guess that's just the flow of time,” says Taro.
“I thought holding the reins is an advantage if the physical distribution itself is an advantage over Steam and the like, so even if digital downloads are pushed forward, there will be a future where only expensive limited editions are physical (like CD distribution). Missed the mark, too bad.”
I like the idea of limited physical editions, if we're forced into an all-digital age, but PlayStation has decided to do away with them entirely. It's also sad that if Taro makes another Nier game in the near future (please dear god), it probably won't be on a disc either. It's a shame, but that's the future PlayStation has created for us.
