In this modern age, horror titles are a dozen, and unless you belong to one of the biggest horror franchise, it is extremely difficult to make a name for yourself. That is why many modern horror games try to create a distinct identity by merging several genres and playing styles. Black Salt Games' Dredge is the perfect example of this.
Was released in 2023, Dredge is a fishing -rpg with strong Lovecraftian horror elements. During the day, players sail the open seas, catch fish and upgrade their equipment. At night, they must avoid the gigantic monsters that persecute them through the fog. Dredge Received very positive reviews at launch, and thanks to some DLCs after launch and end up to new platforms, it continues to remain relevant in recent years. So much that Dredge seems to be inspiring new indie games like Out fishing.

On the surface, Mūn Mūn Games' Out fishing Looks like another chill indie fishing. The revealing trailer shows all brand mechanic fans of the genre can expect to find, with the player office that throws out a line, captures some fish, sells their catch and uses that money to upgrade their equipment. It is a familiar loop, and one that looks suitably relaxing, with a little surrounding music, dynamic weather and a day-night bike that helps it.
But Out fishing is far from just a cozy fishing game. Lurks just below the surface is a world of psychological horror. The sea players are fishing in is actually the place for a long forgotten disappearance, and memories from the gloomy event visit the place. But much like DredgeThese horror comes only at night.
While players can fish to the content of their hearts under the light of day, the darkness of the night will see them surrounded by unknown threats, hide in the pitch that surrounds its fishing variety. Player's campsite is their only safe sanctuary, and upgrade of it will be an important part of Out fishingGameplay loop.
Players will have to use their revenue to not only upgrade their fishing equipment, but to buy weapons to defend themselves and buy upgrades for their camps to ensure their survival. And the longer players survive, the closer they will learn the truth behind this mysterious disappearance.
Out fishing aims to echo the “psychological fear” by Alan Wake and Silent Hill
For several nights in the game, players will experience a widespread “slow -burned” horror story that gives them “cryptic meetings and worrying discoveries.” As players progress through the game, their character will slowly lose their grip on reality, as their intrigue grows into obsession.
On Out fishingSteam -page, it is said that games like Alan WakeThe Quiet hilland Murdun is all inspiration, especially for the game's attitude to psychological horror. With these influences in mind, players can probably expect to experience some rather unpleasant game sequences.
