Horikoshi mixes Gothic inspiration for the appearance of these characters and strange to create a striking and dark aesthetics.
-
Each character's design, clothing and abilities reflect elements that are common in Gothic images and contribute to their unique and memorable appearance.
Coming with a whole new character from the ground up can never be simple, but a way that a manga writer can make this process is easier is by basing them on a certain style or aesthetics. An excellent example of this is Gothic characterswhich tends to be characterized as furious, moody and unhappy in their designs and actions. When it comes to their clothing feeling specifically, these individuals tend to integrate as much black into their clothes as possible, but that does not mean that they cannot carry any bright or lively colors. They just tend to be diluted to create a more eerie overall image.
The one who has read or looked at My hero Academy Will know that author Kohei Horikoshi can become quite wild and creative with his character design, so it was inevitable that he would start introducing some Gothic characters into his story. As a result there is a handful My hero Academy characters that fit this description. It's time to take a closer look at Why these My hero Academy Characters would be regarded as gothic First, and most importantly, that fits the description most.
Fumikage Tokoyami
A mysterious student who relies on darkness to deal with injuries
- First appearance: Section 5
- Sarcasm: Dark shadow
While most of the students in Class 1-A are known for their optimistic and chip personalities, Tokoyami is a little different. This mysterious future hero can often be seen in the shadows at any time he is not in battle, which means that he can remain completely out of sight thanks to his pitch -black clothes, which he always wears as a way to enter his own.
Tokoyami has the power to control a giant, shady device, which is honestly quite scary up close, considering how gigantic it can be after the sun has gone down. It seems clear that Horikoshi would go to a very dark, goth-inspired design schedule when he found out what this lovely student would look like, which allowed him to really stand out in his class as a result.
Spot
Stain's appearance and quirk both evoke feelings of fear
- First appearance: Section 29
- Sarcasm: Bloodcurdle
At first sight, Satin May seem a little more colorful than many other characters on this list, but his appearance is still clearly designed to strike terror to anyone who puts his eyes on him. That being said, parts of his outfit are still very reminiscent of what would usually be seen in Gothic way, especially his glossy black pants and stylish black boots, which he always comes with him when he goes on a new hero hunt.
Not only that, Stain's Quirk, which allows him to consume the blood of others to paralyze them, is also closely related to Dracula, which is a very prominent figure in the 19th century Gothic literature. While Stain himself may not refer to his own style as Gothic, at least it seems that Horikoshi took some notes from the special aesthetics when he decided on what the stain would look like and act in the main history.
Review
Makes their presence known with an incredibly striking design
- First appearance: Section 62
- Sarcasm: Review
For most people, the whole point of having a fashion style is to give a concrete representation of who they really are below the surface, and this definitely applies to the luminous villain called Review. What most fans remember about review is the giant beak that covers his mouth. As someone who believes that all heroes are plagued by what he calls 'Hero syndrome', he can almost always be seen with this mechanical construction that is linked to his face to protect himself from being infected.
Pest doctors are a very common sight in Gothic images and references. When they are paired with their devilish droopy eyes, the mask really makes a review seems like an unnecessary and back -cool villain when he first appears in the story with Eri. On the other hand, he also has a light, fluffy coat, which helps to give him a small touch of the class, which again falls in line with the Gothic style.
Kurrogiri
The League of Villains' Loyal Butler is both fashionable and scary
- First appearance: Section 5
- Sarcasm: Warp Gate
In terms of patterns, Kurrogiri is one of the most creative and bizarre characters in all My hero Academy. The most remarkable aspect of this villain appearance is the wave of scary shadows that form his face, with two bright yellow eyes pointing through the top. But since he also often decides to dress in nice clothing, it gives a nice contrast that makes Kurogiri look very different from the other rogue members of the league.
If Horikoshi aimed to make this guy look as scary as possible, he definitely met the mark. Kurogiri really presents itself as an odd ball monster that could have been demolished straight out of a Gothic novel. While he remains absent for a good part of the story, many fans will still remember Kurogiri for their striking design, which borrows many elements from Gothic aesthetics.
Dabi
My Hero -Mot. The Frankenstein
- First appearance: Section 5
- Sarcasm: Blue flame
My hero Academy is often seen as an uplifting and inspiring series, but a character that does not represent any of these qualities is Dabi. Since Dabi's extremely powerful blueflame quirk literally burns his body at any time he uses it, it means that he mainly looks like a modern Frankenstein, with much of his body that is sewn together to give him a horrible appearance. Despite this, it is also clear that Dabi still has a great interest in fashion, as he is almost always seen swinging a spotted black jacket along with several piercings on his face.
Given that Dabi has one of the most tragic rear stories in some character in the series, Horikoshi probably wanted to make sure this fell in line with his appearance, so to go with a very unfortunate and Gothic design was definitely the right choice. There are many reasons to love Dabi, but a big one is his threatening look, which remains in the mind long after he left a scene.
Deborah Gollini
Deborah would fit into a Gothic party or fashion event
- First appearance: My hero Academy: You're Next
- Sarcasm: Daydream
Deborah Gollini is a character that only appears in My hero Academy: You're Next Film, where she plays a rather important role in the story as one of the greatest antagonists. While many characters in the series will integrate some Gothic ideas here into their design, Deborah takes this to a whole new level, with her black dress and Suave giant top hat that makes it look like she is always on her way to the nearest funeral.
While much of her clothes are therefore covered by black, she also has some extra decorations that add at least a little color to outfit, such as a red rose, which gives enough contrast without looking in its place. Deborah's Quirk, Day Dream, makes her enter the Gothic inspiration even more. This allows her to hypnotize her goals in much the same way that Dracula can. It is a pity that deborah is actually not shown in the main story about My hero AcademyBecause she is a character that directly appeals to everyone who is a fan of everything to do with the world of Gothic fashion.
