Mortal Kombat: Legacy Collection just received a new free update that adds important features including cross-platform play. Developed by the retro gaming specialists at Digital Eclipse, Mortal Kombat: Legacy Collection compiles 23 different Mortal Kombat games in arcade, console and handheld versions. This collection isn't limited to mainline entries, as it also includes several spin-off titles. This includes some of the franchise's more infamous entries, such as Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Mortal Kombat: Special Forces.
Notably, this collection includes the WaveNet version of the Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3a limited edition arcade test version of the game believed to be lost after its release in 1997. These original Mortal Kombat games have also been improved in several ways to offer a host of modern features, including online multiplayer and rollback netcode. This collection allows hardcore fighting fans to experience these old-school Mortal Kombat games on modern platforms alongside the franchise's more recent entries, like 2023's Mortal Kombat 1.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection free update includes Cross-Play and VRR
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Collection has received a new free update that brings some notable features to the games, and players can access it right now. The most notable inclusion is cross-platform play on all systems, or Crossplay, according to the game's typography style. While Crossplay is turned off by default, players can enable it in Settings to play online with players on all platforms in Quick Play and Online Arcade modes.

This update also allows players to play online two-on-two matches across titles like the fan favorite The Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Mortal Kombat 4and both versions of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Additionally, this update adds variable refresh rate (VRR) support across compatible devices and platforms, which Digital Eclipse notes will “sync the display to the non-standard frame rates used on the original arcade games.” This will improve the overall presentation and should help minimize the game's input lag. The latest update to Mortal Kombat: Legacy Collection also adds new localization options and other minor bug fixes.
The latest Mortal Kombat: Legacy Collection update adds some pretty big new options to these classic fighting games, and its arrival is perfectly timed with the upcoming release of Mortal Kombat 2 Film. The addition of cross-platform play allows these older ones Mortal Kombat game to maintain a strong online community across the game's various systems, including PC, and both last-gen and current-gen PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch devices. It is worth noting that not all games in the collection are compatible with this new feature, which The Mortal Kombat Trilogy is not compatible with Crossplay on the original Nintendo Switch version.

It seems to be the last major update Mortal Kombat: Legacy Collectionwhich probably explains why it contains so many important new features. Although Digital Eclipse notes that it will “continue to identify bug fixes and improvements,” none will be as big as this update, and Digital Eclipse is unlikely to add additional titles to the collection. Even so, this new update should give fans a lot more to enjoy in these classic titles while they wait for NetherRealm's next big Mortal Kombat game, which may come after the recently leaked one Injustice 3.
