Demon Hunter fans eat well World of Warcraft: Midnight. Not only will Void Elves be able to choose a class, but they get a brand new specialization in the form of the Devourer. This midrange hybrid Demon Hunter plays quite differently than the other two specs, with mobile, ranged capabilities unlike Havoc or Vengeance. Additionally, players will be able to choose this specialization under World of Warcraft: Midnight Pre-Patch, which is currently expected to arrive on January 20, 2025.
But what might make Devourer Demon Hunter particularly unique is the full visual overview you get when using it. Gone are the gout of green flames typically used by the class, replaced with void-themed blues and purples. This aesthetic transformation from the ground up gives the Devourer a completely different look than most Demon Hunters in a way that World of Warcraft should benefit from in the future.
The Unique Look of WoW: Midnight's Devourer Demon Hunter
What makes the Devourer Demon Hunter in World of Warcraft: Midnight so special?
There are plenty of classes that play differently based on their specialization. Druid is the most obvious example; Balance and Feral Druids are both DPS, but the former is a caster who wields solar and lunar magic, while the latter ravages enemies in melee in a Rogue-like Cat's shapeshifting form. The Devourer also changes completely World of Warcraft Demon Hunter playstyle. Rather than a melee focused class, they are a highly mobile mage who can move while casting, diving in for short melee combos while keeping Metamorphosis up for as long as possible.
But what really sets Devourer apart is the unique visual transformation the specialization gets. Abilities like Metamorphosis, Immolation Aura, and even Imprisonment all get tweaks to their visual effects, icons, and names, removing the wrong green Demon Hunters are familiar with. Also Fel-Scarred DH Hero Talent in Wow is different for the new spec; it's called Void-Scarred for Devourers, and it has nodes with different names and even newly colored splash art.
Some other classes have done parts of this before. For example, Destruction Warlocks in World of Warcraft will find that Shadow Bolt becomes Incinerate instead. That said, the Devourer Demon Hunter's top-to-bottom transformation is a first for World of Warcraft – but hopefully it won't be the last.
World of Warcraft should double on Devourer's modified images
The Devourer Demon Hunter visual overhaul is a proof of concept for class skins, a feature that fans have wanted for a long time. Although two spells of the same specialization will play mostly the same in-game, many people have wished there was a way to customize the visual effects of spells to allow them to customize their character's abilities based on their background, culture, or even just player preference. Some of the more popular ones World of Warcraft class skin ideas that players have offered over the years include:
-
Survival Hunter without bombs/weapons/stuff
-
Shadow Priest without Void Tentacles
-
Monks with more standard battle stances based on August Celestials
-
Evokers with Shadowflame
-
Solar or Lunar Paladins and Clerics
-
Outlaw Rogues with fewer (or more) guns
-
Warlock with spells and undead summons
-
Balance druids that focus on only solar or lunar magic
-
Shadowlands Covenant themed Death Knights
World of Warcraft have dipped their toes into this idea before. The Green Fire Warlock quest from Mists of Pandaria is the most prominent example, as it gives every fiery spell and icon a Fel-green makeover, but the Glyph system in World of Warcraft and also some hero talents can also modify some abilities. Unfortunately, these cosmetic features are underutilized, and World of Warcraft fans have been lucky enough to get a handful of new Glyphs in a given expansion.
The controversial World of Warcraft expansion scared away many players later, but Shadowlands Character customization overhaul had players flocking back to the game from the beginning, proving that cosmetic customization is a big deal for the community. Be it by doubling the Glyphs, more one-offs like the Warlock's Green Fire quest or the Devourer Demon Hunter, or a full-fledged class skin system, hopefully, World of Warcraft will one day give fans the keys to shift their characters' immersion into overdrive.
