LEGO's leaked Legendary Pokemon sets continue an annoying trend

LEGOs upcoming Rayquaza set will reportedly be significantly smaller than initial leaks suggested, according to a recent report from a reliable source. While previous claims about its overall size are still believed to have been accurate, new information suggests the model may mark another instance of a brick-built base dominating the number of pieces in a LEGO set.

The Danish toy maker is licensed Pokémon Line is still early in the race, with its first products initially launched in late February 2026. Yet the theme is already beginning to split between display models and interactive playsets. Underscoring that trend, the recently revealed second wave of LEGO Pokémon focuses on the company's nascent Smart Play platform rather than traditional brick-built models. While fan favorites like Pikachu and Charizard are included in both types of sets, popular legendaries are expected to follow shortly. One such model, a sizable Rayquaza set believed to have a four-figure number of pieces, has been mentioned in numerous leaks dating back to early 2026.

The LEGO Rayquaza set is rumored to have a large sky pillar at the expense of the Pokémon's size

According to a new report from the Brick Tap community, a “large amount” of the rumored Rayquaza set's 1,083 pieces will reportedly be used to build the top of the Sky Pillar and the surrounding clouds, which act as a display stand. The source also reiterated recent leaks about the first LEGO Pokémon Rayquaza set, stating that the model will include a Zinnia minifigure with a printed Mega Stone accessory, but will not feature an alternate build of Mega Rayquaza. That context changes how the earlier leak can be interpreted. A count of 1,083 parts initially made the model sound like a pretty hefty standalone Rayquaza build, but the reported Sky Pillar build suggests Pokémon itself could be much more modest in size once the base is considered.

The rumored 72168 Rayquaza wouldn't be the company's first new set whose display structure accounts for a significant portion of the build. Earlier this year, the LEGO Icons 11389 Project Hail Mary series devoted a notable portion of its pieces to the stand needed to present the spacecraft in flight, making the base a central part of the finished model rather than a minor accessory.

Several other new and upcoming LEGO sets follow a similar design strategy. The 42221 NASA Artemis Space Launch System, 72152 Pikachu and Poke Ball, 76968 Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus rex, 21350 Jaws, and (to a lesser extent) 10331 Kingfisher Bird models all rely on solid presentations or environmental bases.

LEGO collectors have long been divided on sets with elaborate stands. Some fans see such builds as annoying and frustrating, claiming they can feel like filler when the main model is smaller than expected. Others argue that large displays can work well and treat them as another avenue for creative expression. Where the rumored 72168 Rayquaza falls on that spectrum should become clear soon, as the oft-leaked set is expected to launch on August 1st.
