Everyone is always arguing about how difficult it would be to develop a Superman game – what could possibly challenge his unparalleled Kryptonian strength? What isn't talked about often is that this isn't unique to Man of Steel, as there are tons of superpowers that would be just as difficult to balance in a video game. Like, say, Wolverine, with his healing factor that can bring him back from the brink of a nuclear explosion and even from ending up in the sun on an asteroid.
How do you make an action game rewarding if you can't die? That's a problem Insomniac faced when developing Marvel's Wolverine, and the solution was surprisingly simple. “Logan's healing factor has shown itself in many different ways over the years, and where we ended up was our Logan Can die,” game director Mike Daly explained in an interview with Variety. “He dies when his heart stops, and his healing factor can no longer be activated, and that's represented by his health bar.”
Marvel's Wolverine lets you customize your mutant abilities
Of course, in the comics, Wolverine gets his flesh melted away, rips the Hulk in half, gets run over by the Punisher with a steamroller, and has his heart completely ripped out of his chest, so the Insomniac version is decidedly weaker. But, as Daly said, it's a “tricky challenge” to make immortality work in a video game, and weakening him for balance makes for a more intuitive experience.
“It's a simple system that players easily understand,” Daly said. “Now that said, Logan's healing is—his body's energy can regenerate at an incredible rate when it's dedicated to these healing waves. So outside of combat, he can heal very quickly and come up completely refreshed. You never have to worry about health packs or repairs or anything like that.
“During combat, his energy is in fighting and taking out enemies and doing aggressive damage, so his healing factor slows to a crawl,” he continued. “You can expand your repertoire of moves and apply some customization to your mutated abilities that allow you to heal by taking advantage of certain abilities in battle.”
Aside from a health bar, Wolverine also has a rage mechanic that can kickstart his heart and give him a “healing surge mid-battle”. We saw this in the gameplay footage shown at State of Play yesterday, but using adrenaline to come back to life “leaves you vulnerable for a while”, so it's a risky last resort more than anything else.
