Hunter X Hunter officially makes history with new legendary record

Hunter x Hunterby Yoshihiro Togashi, is an icon in the manga world. This masterpiece by Togashi is almost three decades old now, and yet it continues to reach new milestones and make history. Recently, with the announcement of Hunter x Hunter Volume 39's upcoming July 2026 release we finally got a new updated sales estimate on Hunter x Hunter by Shueisha, and the results are astounding. After stagnating at 84 million copies sold for quite a while, Hunter x Hunter has now broken into the 100 million sales mark, a shocking number for a series that is consistently on hiatus.

In doing so, it made history by becoming the 24th manga to achieve this feat. Togashi was already a legendary Mangaka, but he has now reached a level of success that only a few have ever achieved, and this success is only multiplied when you consider his other hit story, Yu Yu Hakusho. HxH will only grow further from here on out.

Hunter x Hunter officially becomes one of the 24 manga series to surpass 100 million sales

Hunter x Hunter 100 million sales

Hunter x Hunter is a story that follows a main cast consisting of Gon Freecs, Killua Zoldyck, Kurapika Kurta, and Leorio Paradinight. These four meet when they are on their way to complete the hunter exam, and since then they have formed a strong bond, even if they are not always involved together in the same arc. This story by Yoshihiro Togashi has captivated many, and it officially marked its beginning all the way back on March 3, 1998, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #14. The series quickly caught the attention of fans, and on October 16, 1999, it received its first anime by Nippon Animation, but its actual TV series would be its second adaptation by Madhouse, which was released on October 2, 2011.

Regardless of the anime's success, the Hunter x Hunter series has become incredibly popular worldwide, and fans have fallen in love with the sheer quality delivered in the manga when it drops, making it a huge success despite not having an ongoing anime series. Just four years ago, in May 2022, Hunter x Hunter officially revealed that the series had reached the milestone of 84 million sales, which was huge for the time. Today, this figure has long since been surpassed.

After a long wait, we finally have a new sales estimate for Togashi's manga. With Hunter x Hunter Volume 39 now set to release in Japan on July 3, 2026, a big reveal was made about the new sales milestone. We finally know that HxH has surpassed 100 million sales, which is a huge record that only 24 series have reached in all the decades of manga serialization in Japan. With 38 volumes already released this gives HxH an impressive 2.6 million sales per volume.

What's more surprising is that Togashi's manga achieved this milestone despite having an inconsistent serialization schedule since all the way back in 2006 due to his health. This shows the dedication of Hunter x Hunter fanbase, and is a reflection of Togashi's incredible writing.

Most young generation anime and manga fans know Togashi for his hit series Hunter x Hunter. After all, the series has turned out to be his biggest financial success, and by a long shot. That being said, Togashi has another extremely successful manga from the 1990s, and that is Yu Yu Hakusho. Back in his time, Yu Yu Hakusho was comparable to the likes of Sailor Moon, Slam Dunk and Berserk.

This manga began serialization on December 3, 1990, in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #51, and ended on July 25, 1994, in issue #32, for a total of 19 volumes. Although the Yu Yu Hakusho serialization was shorter, it was also extremely successful, with over 50 million sales. That gives the series an average of 2.6 million sales per volume, exactly the same figure as Hunter x Hunter in that regard. When you combine both Hunter x Hunter and Yu Yu Hakushowe can see that Togashi's sales figures are much more impressive.

Together, Hunter x Hunter's new sales record of 100+ million and Yu Yu Hakusho's 50+ million make Togashi a mangaka with 150+ million sales to his name. This figure makes him one of the best-selling manga authors of all time.

We were all extremely happy to know that Yoshihiro Togashi is Hunter x Hunter has reached a huge milestone. The success of the franchise continues, despite the obstacles it faced due to the hiatus. While most stories are forgotten when the hiatus becomes frequent, Hunter x Hunter has kept fans coming for more every time it makes a comeback in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Magazine. On June 28, 2026, the manga finally returned in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #31 with Chapter 411, much to the excitement of millions of fans.

With the manga set to continue for at least a few months, sales will only increase going forward. Seeing as how the manga was able to go from 84 to 100 million in just 4 years with limited volume releases and no anime to back it up, we can expect a steady pace going forward. Togashi has already completed at least 20 chapters and is working on over 30 new chapters. That's about three volumes of content to expect over the next year or so. Along with the new Hunter X Hunter Volume 39 will be released on July 3, 2026, we can expect the biggest sales increase in years for the series.

If Hunter x Hunter's anime were to return, then the backlog of sales and returning fan interest would be even greater. At the moment, there are quite a few reports about the return of the anime, but nothing is official. Hopefully we'll see new information about its potential anime return soon. For now, we can all enjoy the ongoing Succession Contest Arc which is serialized every week and continues where the story left off two years ago, in December 2024. Hunter x Hunter's Succession Contest arc reaches its climax and we finally have the current main character, Kurapika, back in action. There is still over a month left for the Black Whale to reach its destination and for the new King of Kakin to present himself.

Hunter x Hunter by Yoshihiro Togashi is available to read for free via Manga Plus and Viz Media. The manga is currently back and serialized weekly.
