Farming is important to make your life in Windrose more convenient, and if you want to get started, you just need to secure some seeds and find fertile soil to find them. We're literal with the latter – Windrose have building blocks called fertile soil (which can be turned into seedbeds), and without them you won't be able to plant anything but shrubs and trees. You can find fertile soil by exploring the Foothills biomes, although this can be easier said than done if you're just starting out.

Where to find fertile soil in Windrose
Players can obtain fertile soil by searching for Ancient Farms on islands of the Foothills biome. You can find these islands just by sailing across the ocean, but if you want the game to determine the location of the nearest one, go and finish the quest Revenge is Best Served Cold. Completing this will launch the needle into a Haystack quest, sending you to a nearby Foothills island.
If this is your first time going to a Foothills island, it's best to come prepared. Bring the best weapons you have and try not to fight anything that is too high level for you.
Now, when you get to a Foothills Island, set up a small beach camp with a tent, a campfire, and a Fast Travel Bell. If you have Immersive Exploration turned off in your world settings, check all the question mark icons on your map one by one until you find an old farm. Once you find one, clear out any enemies lurking there, then look for a seed bed. They are usually right next to one of the walls of the destroyed building.
Then take out your pick and then hit the fertile soil until its individual pieces break. Be sure to get every bit, as you will need as much land as possible to make a farm that can handle all the seeds you need to plant.
Don't forget to check out the surroundings of any ancient farm you find. They usually have fully grown crops in them.
How to plant seeds in Windrose
Now that you have some fertile soil, go back to your base and choose a good place to make your farm. Open your Build Menu and then navigate to the Farming section. Here you see the option to place fertile soil as well as all the seeds you have discovered so far. Choose fertile soil and then build your own seed bed.
Once the seed bed is built, you can now place crops on it. Thankfully, you don't have to take care of these seeds to make them grow. Just lay them out evenly and they will mature into useful plants, fruits and vegetables after a few days in the game. After you plant your seeds, go do something else while they grow. If you haven't yet, the Glorious Hunters quest is great if you want a shiny new musket for your collection.
The seeds are reusable; once you harvest a plant you always get back a seed. You can purchase seeds by purchasing the Food Merchant Contract from the People of Tortuga Provisioner in Tortuga. Be sure to save some room for a merchant NPC at your base when you get a merchant contract.
Harvesting plants in the wild has a low chance of yielding a seed.
