Legendary game developer Hidetaka Miyazaki recently spoke to Japanese news outlet Game Watch and confirmed that there are no plans to Fire Ring 2. Fans are still waiting for another sequel Blood borne or Demon's Soulsunfortunately, know exactly what this means.
But only because there won't be one Fire Ring 2doesn't mean that From software have no big plans for other exciting projects down the road. Miyazaki's comments on a Fire Ring the sequel, while perhaps disappointing, indicates that the studio is still committed to creating new and innovative experiences rather than just building specific IP. After all, Fire Ring itself would likely never have happened if FromSoftware had simply stuck to making Dark souls sequel. Of course, this means that upcoming FromSoftware releases are more shrouded in mystery, as it's hard to imagine what the famous studio could do next. But that's part of what makes the company's future so exciting.
Family
If Sony is acquiring from software, it needs to take an obvious opportunity sooner rather than later
With reports surfacing of Sony possibly acquiring FromSoftware, it's worth wondering how the two companies might work if they do indeed merge.
The sky is the limit for FromSoftware moving forward
FromSoftware will continue to work on new projects
After extinguishing hopes of a Fire Ring sequel, Miyazaki told Game Watch that FromSoftware has “several projects” currently in the works, with some of them being “different variations of projects.” Alluring ambiguities aside, these comments seem to indicate that FromSoftware is pushing into several new arenas, not putting all its eggs in one basket, so to speak.
There have been rumors of a magic-centric game from FromSoftware, so perhaps this could be included in the “multiple projects” Miyazaki referred to. Assuming that's the case, that still leaves room for at least one other game in development, which may or may not be helmed by Miyazaki himself. FromSoftware tends to develop multiple games at the same time, with VR horror titles Déraciné is worked on on the side Sekirofor example. Given the huge differences in tone and gameplay between these two titles, they can serve as a rough overview of what audiences can expect from FromSoftware in the future. That is, they can expect the unexpected, because FromSoftware is certainly not afraid to step outside its comfort zone.
From software can work on sequels or spin-offs to older games
FromSoftware has a notorious aversion to sequels, ignoring beloved IP even in the face of rampant fan demand (see: Blood borne). This can be frustrating, but keeping an eye on the horizon is what enables the studio's consistent innovation and creativity, especially since so many of its games are iteratives of previous works. For example, Demon's Souls and Dark souls are not actually connected through narrative means, but the latter is clearly a spiritual successor to the former, learning from its strengths and weaknesses.
Perhaps gaming audiences will see similar relationships with future FromSoftware games; there may never be one Fire Ring 2but there might be another sprawling open world game, set in a completely different universe, that follows certain principles in soul-like games. Maybe an open world adventure with Blood borne-like or Sekiro-like battle may be in the cards.
Armored Core 6 also set an interesting precedent for the studio. After the 2013s Armored Core: Judgment Daymost familiar with the franchise assumed it had been forgotten, usurped by the much more popular one Dark souls and its heirs. But then, a decade later came Armored Core 6proving that FromSoftware is open to revisiting older franchises under certain circumstances. So, even though it's been over nine years Blood borne was released, and more than fifteen years ago Demon's Soulsperhaps these long-forgotten titles will receive sequels, spin-offs, or continuations of some other kind. This may be what Miyazaki meant by “variations of different projects” in his Game Watch interview. But as always, only time will tell what it has in store.
