Metroid as a franchise is in a bit of a tricky place at the moment. It's pretty popular, and Metroid Prime 4 was relatively well received, but it didn't quite have the sales you'd expect from a true Nintendo blockbuster. That led many to fear that Nintendo would just decide to leave Metroid to gather dust for a while, but thankfully that doesn't seem to be the case.
A new Metroid game may have been leaked
Earlier today, it was discovered by Twitter user Necrolipe that a Brazilian rating board may have inadvertently leaked the name of a new 2D Metroid game currently in development for the Nintendo Switch 2. That rating has since been deleted, but not before people got their screenshots to reveal that the name of this game is apparently Metroid Ravenous.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Was Never Going To Be The Game You Wanted It To Be
It turned out that restarting Metroid Prime 4 was out of the question.
Not only that, but it also claims that this game will be released sometime in 2026. Judging by the fact that this is the first we're actually hearing about this game, and the criminally low amount of footage we've seen of the Ocarina of Time remake, we can guess that we'll probably be getting another Nintendo Direct sometime later in September, possibly.
That's where we'll most likely see the announcement of Metroid Ravenous, if it actually exists. While this is pretty solid evidence, and it's been a few years since the last 2D Metroid game (which is Metroid Dread back in 2021), it's worth noting that it's not official confirmation yet. It's best to keep expectations in check until we see what the game is, but since it's likely to be released this year, it'll probably be sooner rather than later.
