Nintendo Switch 2 leak hints at massive storage improvements

A new Switch 2 accessory leak suggests that the upcoming Nintendo console will offer some massive storage improvements over its predecessor.

The critically acclaimed JRPG is now also in the works for Switch 2, according to well-known leaker NateTheHate, who said as much during the January 10th episode of his podcast. The second game in Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, Rebirthwill also be coming to Nintendo's next console, the insider said.

FF7 Remake and Rebirth are also said to be coming to Xbox

NateTheHate framed the alleged Switch 2 ports on Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth as part of Square Enix's multi-platform publishing push, which the Japanese gaming giant announced in May 2024. In addition to Nintendo's upcoming console, both games are also headed to the Xbox Series X/S, the longtime leaker said. Final Fantasy 7 Remake is slated to land on Microsoft's current generation consoles in 2025, while Rebirth will follow after 2026, according to the same source. NateTheHate didn't specify the games' Switch 2 launch windows, but it's likely they'll mirror the Xbox release schedule he posted. While these alleged ports hint at the possibility that the third game in the trilogy will also cross platforms, this will not happen on day one, as Sony has already secured timed exclusivity rights for all three games.

When exactly the new versions of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth can be confirmed is unclear. NateTheHate speculates that at least one of them could be announced at the 2025 Xbox Developer Direct, which is scheduled to take place on January 23rd. The Switch 2 ports apparently cannot be confirmed until the console itself is officially revealed, which Nintendo promised would happen before the end of the 2024 fiscal year, which runs until March 31. While new main entries in Square Enix's iconic series have consistently skipped the Switch, the Japanese publisher has still largely supported Nintendo's hybrid console, which has received 16 Final Fantasy titles so far, ranging from FF15 Pocket Edition HD in September 2018 to the first six FF games in April 2023.
