Classic Steam horror game from 2005 delisted without warning

Condemned: Criminal Origins has been delisted from Steam and Xbox Store, without notice or explanation. While existing owners can still download it, there are currently no indications that the classic survival horror game will be returning to Steam or any other storefront anytime soon.

The delisting is probably linked to the recent closure of Condemned: Criminal Origins developer Monolith Productions. Parent company Warner Bros. Games shut down the Washington-based studio in February 2025, citing a desire to refocus its resources amid broader restructuring efforts.

Condemned: Criminal Origins Delisted After Hitting All-Time Low Price

Condemned: Criminal Origins was removed from Valve's storefront on October 31st. As is typical of such moves, the game's Steam page remains live, but it no longer allows purchases. The title was pulled from the Microsoft/Xbox store at the same time. The delisting took place while Condemned: Criminal Origins was on sale for 75% off, again matching its all-time low price of $3.73 – something it has done many times over the years. The discount went live as part of the Steam Scream 4 Fest sale on October 27th.

Condemned: Criminal origins possibly delisted due to routine rights cleaning

The fact that Damned was taken from Valve's digital storefront on the last day of the month suggests that the delisting may be the result of routine rights management, although no reason has been officially announced. Given that Sega published the game on both PC and Xbox while development was handled by Monolith, the delisting may be due to expiring rights or agreements related to that arrangement. Some contracts in the industry include automatic renewal provisions that continue as long as both parties are in place and in good standing. Hypothetically speaking, the closure of a contracting party could interrupt this renewal or trigger a claim for repayment. However, since a 19-year-old horror game is probably no longer generating significant revenue, Sega may have decided that it's not worth the effort to continue with Warner Bros.

Social media reports suggest that Fanatical was still selling discounted Steam keys too Condemned: Criminal Origins shortly after the delisting. That is no longer the case as of the evening of November 1 (ET). Given Fanatical's business model, the offer was likely based on a pre-purchased batch of older keys that would have sold out eventually even without the discount.

Condemned: Criminal Origins owes its cult classic status to, among other things, its exciting (and extremely gory) combat, oppressive sound design, and detailed environments. Back in the golden age of physical publishing, it also surprised some people because it wasn't really marketed as a horror title, but an interactive story about an FBI agent hunting down a serial killer. These days, Condemned: Criminal Origins has a reputation as one of the best survival horror games of the mid-2000s, making the delisting a notable loss for younger fans of the genre interested in exploring its classic titles.
