Call Of Duty Black Ops 6: Best Melee Weapons

World at war

Unleashed Zombies Upon The Gaming World

Released

November 11, 2008

At the time of its release World at war met with a slightly colder reception after the juggernaut that was Modern warfare. Removing it from that game's shadow, however, reveals a perfectly decent first-person shooter in the middle of nowhere.

The game also deserves all the respect for introducing the Zombies mode to the series. Zombies, originally unlocked after beating the game, have become a separate arm of the series, with many players engaging with Call of Duty just for the situation. While the Zombies mode is only barebones here, the ability to play it cooperatively with friends makes it a blast. That helped too World at war stands out from other local multiplayer games at the time.

Call Of Duty: Every Black Ops Game Ranked

Treyarch's Black Ops franchise continues to grow, but which of these Call of Duty titles stand out among the rest?

Black Ops: Cold War

Face-Off playlists in split screen

Released

November 13, 2020

What does Black Ops: Cold War suitable for this list despite missing any modes or features seemingly tailored for local multiplayer? That's the face-off playlist. These three-on-three matches on small maps are incredibly hectic.

Players can die three times in thirty seconds or get five deaths in five seconds. Local multiplayer means everyone hears the same thing. In normal multiplayer modes, this would be a major disadvantage as players cannot pay attention to enemy footsteps to know where people are coming from. In face-off, such nuances in sound design are unimportant. There is an enemy almost around every corner.

Modern Warfare (2019)

Gunfight Mode is a game changer

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Released

25 October 2019

The restart of Modern warfare the series brought a ton of changes, including a revamped Ground War mode for dozens of players. At the opposite end is Gunfight for four combatants. This mode is perfect for local play as it only consists of two teams of two going against each other in short rounds.

Playing on the same screen can even be an advantage here. Players can directly communicate with each other about strategies and teammates can see where enemies are based on their allies' screen.

Modern Warfare 2

Spec Ops Mode provides detailed Co-Op missions

Released

November 10, 2009

Modern Warfare 2 is known for finally starting the fictional World War III on which the trilogy is based. Its multiplayer gave birth to some of the most iconic maps in the series. One should also never forget the Spec Ops mode.

Friends, both online and local, could take on these uniquely designed quests. Each player generally had different roles and each mission offered variety. There was a new level inspired by Modern Warfare “Death From Above” which had one player on the ground while another provided air support. Then there's the classic sniper providing cover fire for someone deep in the action. Asymmetric co-op is still a novelty today, and it was even more impressive in 2009.

Call of Duty: Best Single Playable Characters, Ranked

Call of Duty campaigns can often feature a hot-headed protagonist that's hard to forget, so here's a nostalgic look back at some of the best characters.

The Spec Ops mode makes a return in this game, and it was the last time it would appear until the reboot. Although it lacked Zombies, a survival mode was included that players could similarly tackle together on a console. This gave players two options for local co-op; a narrative option and an arcade-like variant.

Black Ops 3

Local campaign co-op and some of the best zombie maps

Released

November 6, 2015

Black Ops 3 comes from the era when the series looked into the future. As such, players could run on walls and perform wild maneuvers that the games no longer feature. Black Ops 3 also allows players to go through the campaign cooperatively. Four people could play online while two could go at it locally.
