Baldur's Gate 2 Remake Reportedly in Production

Baldur's Gate 2 received a remaster back in 2013, but this project is reportedly a full-fledged remake. Fans of the original will likely be excited to know that the original co-lead designer of the game, Kevin Martens, has returned to work on the remake. There isn't a concrete answer as to whether the original Baldur's Gate is also being remade, but it's looking likely. It's thought that they may both be being worked on simultaneously, but this isn't confirmed. Baldur's Gate 2 is a direct sequel to the first game, with a returning playable character, so it wouldn't make much sense to release them out of order or to ignore the original title completely. However, with that in mind, there is currently no known timeframe for when these games might come out. It's possible that an announcement could be made during the upcoming Summer Game Fest or other summer reveal shows, however.

Minsc In Baldur's Gate 3 and Baldur's Gate 2

Another question is what the gameplay of the remakes will be like. The first two Baldur's Gate games used an isometric perspective, and used pauseable real-time combat. Baldur's Gate 3 was notably different, as combat was entirely turn-based and players could rotate the camera. However, Baldur's Gate 3 was developed with Larian Studios' proprietary Divinity Engine 4.0, and there's no indication that Larian has any involvement with the remakes. It's possible that the remade games may use something like Unreal Engine, but that's speculation for now.

It will likely be a very long time before players get to see a Baldur's Gate 4 game, and without Larian at the helm, there's no telling what it will be like. A return to the early games, which had an extremely positive reception, combined with a modernized game engine and graphics will likely be an exciting adventure for newcomers and long-time fans alike. Those who started the franchise with Baldur's Gate 3 will also get a chance to see earlier adventurers with some of its popular characters, like Jaheira, Minsc, and of course, Boo.
