While Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is a remake, Ubisoft has mentioned that it will make some changes, quality of life improvements, and even additions to the game. First of all, the combat system is being changed to make it a mix between the old counter attack format and the newer RPG combat. The end missions have also been changed to make sure you don't immediately fail upon detection.
While these are welcome changes, there are some that haven't gone down too well with fans. The biggest one is undoubtedly the fact that you won't be able to use Edward's hidden blades as separate weapons. While there are sure to be more changes that will be discussed once the game is out, the developers wanted to make sure they didn't change the fact that Edward was a “badass assassin”.
He is a pirate after all
By “bad Assassin,” game director Richard Knight didn't mean he was bad at killing people. He was simply not as noble as previous protagonists, such as Altair, Ezio or Connor. Edward was a pirate, after all, so it would make sense that he would do business and perform tasks for money. He took a noble turn over the course of the game, but he was hardly honorable to begin with.
“In the original story, [Edward’s] a really badass assassin,” Knight said in a conversation with GamesRadar+. “He takes deals with the Templars, he takes deals for money, he does all these bad things to eventually become this larger-than-life heroic character. And the original game was successful, and we don't want to change that.”
Edward is one of everyone's favorite Assassins, the developers couldn't change anything about his personality. His character development is also a major plot point in the game, so there's really no reason to fix something that isn't broken.
“It's important to us to have the same spirit and flavor of Edward, to tell the same core story, just in greater fidelity, but in a modern gaming experience as well,” Knight continued.
