PlayStation announces dates for next free online multiplayer weekend

PlayStation fans who don't subscribe to PlayStation Plus are in luck, as the consoles will be holding a free-for-all online multiplayer weekend in early December. The free PlayStation weekend will allow players to enjoy the console family's online multiplayer offerings as long as users have a working internet connection and a PSN account.

PlayStation Plus is Sony's subscription service for the PlayStation 4 and 5. In addition to allowing players to play online, the subscription comes in multiple tiers, allowing players to do things like play a selection of free games, stream from the cloud, or even play some PlayStation titles on PC.

PS Plus Premium adds 3 PS2 classics in December 2024

Sony confirms that three classic PlayStation 2 games will join the PS Plus Premium range in December 2024.

In honor of PlayStation's 30th anniversary, the company is giving gamers a free weekend of online multiplayer games, starting on December 6th and running through December 8th. Throughout the weekend, players only need an internet connection and a PlayStation Network account to play any of their owned games online with other players for free. It's a great opportunity to test the service for those who have been on the fence, although the weekend appears to be limited to online games and doesn't give users any free game catalogs to try.

PlayStation is celebrating its 30th anniversary

With the original PlayStation launched way back in 1994, there's a lot for the company to celebrate. In addition to the aforementioned free weekend, Sony will also celebrate with an eSports tournament during the same weekend, December 6-8. Players will be able to participate in games such as Mortal Kombat 1, Tekken 8, Madden NFL 25, Guilty Gear Striveand more. Winners will be awarded in-game avatars and prizes, depending on the game they competed in.

For those who enjoy the online competition and multiplayer capabilities of PS Plus, there is also an opportunity to potentially win a 30-month subscription to PS Plus for free. PlayStation will award the prize to 30 people in each participating country, for a total of 780 winners. To participate, fans simply need to sign up for a PlayStation Plus Premium membership and play any game from the Classics Catalog. Existing members can also participate by playing just one game from the Classics Catalog. The raffles run 10-23 December.

As the year draws to a close, more gamers will get their hands on a PS5 for the first time and try out everything the consoles have to offer. It's a good time to sign up for PS Plus, as the influx of new players should make online gaming more active and exciting.
