Complete breakdown of the Doom Prevails Commander Deck in MTG

Another coming wave of Magic: The Gathering Commander precons are here, and we're taking a closer look at the Doom Prevails product in this guide, covering the newly revealed decklist to take a closer look at the cards and deck synergies.

This Marvel Super Heroes deck will bring back Connive, a mechanic first introduced in Streets of New Capenna. Combine this with life drain mechanics, and possibly some graveyard interactions, and you have, on paper, a brilliant new Commander precon that's on track to be the best of the bunch.

The full list of Marvel Super Heroes Commander decks for this precon is out now, and it looks very impressive. I had my suspicions before preview season that this deck would be the strongest of the four new precons, and it seems that instinct was correct.

Magic: The Gathering – Marvel's Super Heroes Commander Deck Guide

These new Marvel Commander decks come in base and collector editions, with four of each type to collect.

The commander's breakdown

Doctor Doom, King of Latveria, leans heavily into the Connive mechanic, which lets you draw a card, discard a card, then place a +1/+1 counter on the creature that activated the ability if the card you discard is a non-land.

But when you discard one or more land cards, each opponent at the table loses two life if Doctor Doom is on the battlefield. This card basically rewards you in some way, no matter what card you discard when cooperating.

Then, at the start of combat, a target rogue creature you control ends up threatening until end of turn, and it combos.

Loki, the trickster, is the backup Commander for this deck and is arguably one of the best face Commanders from this set, and is far more impactful than many others from the other three decks.

He is a four mana (1U, 1R, 1B, 1C) 4/4 creature that creates a printed and attacking token that is a copy of another target villain you controlexcept that it is not legendary and is an Illusion in addition to its other types. It is sacrificed at the start of the next end step.

Then, whenever one or more Rogues you control deals damage to an opponent, you draw a card.

Strategy

Baron Helmut Zemo MTG Card.

We already know that Connive will play a big role in this game. The mechanic isn't too widespread, with only 35 cards featuring the keyword at the release of Secrets of Strixhaven, but it's back with a bang in Marvel Super Heroes and plays a central role among Villains.

This mechanic relies on you discarding non-land cards to boost creatures containing the keyword, but to ensure you're not just discarding cards for good, there will likely be some interaction with your graveyard to offset the effect.

The other mechanic listed on the box of this card is “Drain Life”, which is pretty straightforward. It's pretty weird to see Connive and Life Drain linked within the same deck, though, since they're not two mechanics that closely mesh, so we're eager to see how well the two match up in this precon.
