GameStop's eBay acquisition plans get weirder as CEO allegedly suspended from site

The GameStop eBay saga continues. GameStop's bullish declaration to make an all-cash bid to buy longtime Internet commerce icon eBay remains bizarre, and it's only gotten weirder. Three days after GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen appeared on CNBC only to avoid the obvious questions about where exactly the $55 billion takeover bid will get its financing, Cohen is at it again, claiming to have been banned from selling items on eBay.

Cohen's statement may not even be backed up by the truth, as his account is live as of this writing. It's certainly possible that it was reintroduced, but either way, some of the actual sales he's made on the eBay platform are patently ridiculous. Once again, GameStop appears to be going all-in on meme-tier silliness in a push to boost its stock price.

Please reply eBay

As IGN first reported, Cohen sold all kinds of items on eBay, including a pair of socks that went for thousands. A stunt? Yes, IGN, I totally agree. A very odd one, then. When Cohen supposedly reached his $50,000 monthly sales limit, he allegedly gave eBay customer service a call, then tweeted begging eBay to respond, which garnered over 11,000 likes. That's why he does these things, if it wasn't obvious.

He was then… banned:

But he's back at it and still selling. Was his suspension even real? I have no idea. The paperwork is there, so to speak, but GameStop's social media account is rolling as a matter of course on terrible AI images, so there's really nothing they won't do to get attention. Granted, that style of operation has helped keep them afloat four years after narrowly avoided bankruptcy after narrowly avoided bankruptcy, but will this form of “entertainment” magically put them in a truly realistic position to buy eBay?

Ryan Cohen certainly seems to think so.
