8 Breathing Styles Closest to the Sun Breathe with power

Demon Slayer introduced shonen anime fans to breathing styles, which Tanjiro Kamado and his allies use to slay demons with their colored Nichirin swords. Although there are different types of breathing styles, Sun Breathing is the most powerful of them all. Created by the legendary Yoriichi Tsugikuni, Sun Breathing became the foundation from which all other styles were derived in Demon Slayer.

Demon Slayer: The 3 characters who created their own breath form

Only a handful of characters in Demon Slayer have been able to create their own breathing forms. Who are they?

As a testament to its power, even Muzan Kibutsuji is intimidated by demon slayers who can use Sun Breathing, as it is the most lethal to his kind. Over the years, many breathing styles have emerged, and some have even developed techniques that come close to the power of Sun Breathing.

Water breathing is easier to learn than sun breathing

It's no secret that Water Breathing is the easiest breathing style to learn Demon Slayer. Even an inexperienced fighter like Tanjiro could pick up Water Breathing without formal long-term training, gradually mastering its basics and later developing his techniques through actual combat experience.

Still, Water Breathing is a top level breathing style that is ideal for surviving against unpredictable demons. It is also one of the most effective in terms of both offense and defense, as the user can adapt well to different enemy styles. Like water, the user uses smooth, flowing movements to deflect incoming attacks, exploit openings, and redirect an opponent's momentum back at them.

Derived from Water Breathing, Flower Breathing is one of the most beautiful and graceful breathing styles in the series. Despite its visually striking effects, Flower Breathing is one of the deadliest breathing styles as it focuses on delivering unpredictable, fast, deadly strikes to an opponent's vital points.

When Kanao used Flower Breathing against Doma in the Infinity Castle Arc, she revealed a two-pronged technique known as the Equinoctial Vermilion Eye, which pushed her vision to its absolute limit, causing the surrounding world to appear to move in slow motion.

Sound breathing is more than just explosive attacks

No flesh-eating demon has ever survived Uzui Tengen's double clefts when he used Sound Breathing in Demon Slayer. Even the likes of Gyutaro and Daki eventually struggled in the Entertainment District Arc against the sole user of Sound Breathing, which turns sound-based perception and rhythm into a deadly combat advantage.

Musical Score, Uzui's advanced sound breathing technique, allows him to break down an opponent's movements into rhythmic patterns, allowing him to predict their actions with extreme accuracy when all conditions are met. In a nutshell, Sound Breathing mimics the explosive power of sound, specifically its loudness, shockwaves, and rhythm, to disorient enemies and break their coordination in battle.

Flame Breathing is similar in style and power to Sun Breathing

Visually, Flame Breathing is probably closest to Sun Breathing due to their similar fiery aesthetics, aggressive offensive style, and high-speed sword techniques that resemble searing moves and flaming heat. It is a top-level breathing style passed down to the Rengoku family, with Kyojuro being the last known user.

Flame Breathing is also one of the flashiest breathing styles, and during Kyojuro Rengoku's mastery, he pushed Akaza to the brink of death in the Mugen Train arc, overwhelming him with a relentless forward push and strong offensive effect. Had Rengoku survived, he would have been able to awaken the mark as well due to his overall fighting ability with the Flame Breathing style.

Wind breathing is the aggressive offshoot of sun breathing

Directly derived from Sun Breathing, Sanemi Shinazugawa's Wind Breathing style is known for its highly aggressive and ruthless attack patterns, defined by razor-sharp wind-cutting power, relentless offensive pressure, and extreme speed. Instead of improving Sanemi's defense, it forces them to attack continuously before the opponent can counter or react.

A single strike from Sanemi's Nichirin sword can hit multiple targets with cutting storm-like wind pressure and can tear through even the toughest defenses. Being hit, of course, means suffering devastating cuts that are difficult to heal.

Thunder Breathing is born from the failure to master Sun Breathing

In a failed attempt to learn Sun Breathing, Yoriichi Tsugikuni's student eventually developed Thunder Breathing due to a lack of power necessary to master the original breathing style. For years, Thunder Breathing only had six forms, not until Zenitsu Agatsuma developed the seventh form to fight Kaigaku on equal terms in the Infinity Castle arc.

Thunder Breathing is an easily recognizable breathing style, characterized by lightning-like movements and strikes that give the user the appearance of blinding speed and almost instantaneous movement. Thunder Breathing is difficult to counter, as only those with equally quick reflexes and heightened perception can keep up with its sudden, powerful forms.

Stone breath draws power from the earth, not the sun

Facing a Demon Slayer using Stone Breathing is not for the faint of heart. Just imagine a heavy hitter like Gyomei Himejima charging across the battlefield at full speed, swinging a massive club and ax with overwhelming power emanating from the ground and the earth itself, turning every clash into a display of pure destructive power. It would truly be a nightmare to match Gyomei's power.

Stone breath users often have to use unconventional heavy weapons instead of standard nichirin swords. During Gyomei Himejima's era, he developed five famous techniques, each focused on delivering overwhelming crushing power while maintaining near-impenetrable defensive ability.

Although Moon Breathing is also derived from Yoriichi Tsugikuni's Sun Breathing, it acts as a corrupted mirror of it. In other words, Moon Breathing is the twisted version of Sun Breathing but is generally considered to be the second strongest of all.

Instead of imitating the sun, Moon Breathing allows its sole user, Kokushibo, formerly known as Michikatsu, to mimic the crescent moon, with his techniques, movements and attacks reflecting flowing moonlight, often manifesting as crescent-shaped slashes in each strike.

Over the years, Kokushibo has combined Moon Breathing with his Blood Demon Art, developing a total of 16 deadly techniques that no other demon slayer or swordsman can replicate.
