As proven by the importance of the Stop Killing Games movement, your favorite online game might not be around forever. Some of the biggest FPS game ever had their servers shut down, with the publisher effectively sentencing them to death. Fortunately, at least on PC, the community tends to pick up the slack and launch unofficial servers, which is the only reason we can play games that 10 Sex, Chromehounds, Global agendaand Infantry online 2026. Unfortunately, some legendary FPS games slipped through this safety net, relegating them to fond memories that reflect their once available glory.
Let's take a trip through history to remember the fallen games that once stood at the forefront of gaming, even if their time in the limelight proved short. Their names are still invoked on Reddit, Twitter and articles like these, hopefully ensuring they are never truly forgotten. Who knows? Maybe one day they will come back in some form or another.
“Legendary” is not a synonym for “good”. If the feature image didn't already give it away, the reason I included this disclaimer will become apparent in due course.

MAG
The best large-scale FPS MMO on consoles has been dead since 2014
MAG
- Released
-
January 26, 2010
These days, true console exclusives are relatively rare, especially when it comes to online games. However, that was not the case in 2010 then MAG is launched exclusively on PS3. An ambitious MMO that broke the boundaries of the console gaming scene by featuring 256-player lobbies, Zipper Interactive's masterpiece didn't take long to become one of the PS3's defining games. Blending epic factional warfare with squad-based action, MAG delivered a manageable sense of scale that allowed players to focus on easy-to-understand objectives while making their contributions feel important to the larger flow of combat. You may even be promoted to leadership roles that change your responsibilities.

Major FPS game franchises that are officially finished
There was a time when FPS reigned supreme and these franchises were at the top of the world, but today they are all but dead and buried.
Although efforts have been made to create community servers, as of May 2026, MAG is still completely unplayable, and that doesn't seem likely to change anytime soon. Of all unplayable legendary FPS games as discussed in this article, this is the one that hurts the most, especially since we haven't really gotten a proper replacement. Will Sony bring MAG back? Honestly, I don't know. Sony has probably prioritized multiplayer projects, but we haven't heard anything about one MAG revival.
Develop
The asymmetrical multiplayer game Before Dead By Daylight
Develop
- Released
-
February 10, 2015
Asymmetric multiplayer games are so common these days that new releases barely register, but that wasn't the case in 2014. Develop beat Dead in daylight to the punch by more than a year, and its human hunter vs. massive monster premise would still be fresh today, given that most games go down the “horror villain escape” route. With well-defined specializations for the hunters, Develop shared much in common with traditional first-person shooters, which should have expanded its scope. Along with just being generally cool, the monsters felt different from each other and went through an evolution that gradually saw them transition from hunted to hunters.
Although it remained for quite some time, Develop was immediately handicapped by 2K, with the publisher slapping a $59.99 price tag despite the game launching with just three monsters. Worse, the aggressive monetization dominated the discourse during the launch period, which immediately put Develop on the defensive. Despite all this nonsense, the game managed to find an audience that stuck around until the servers were nuked into oblivion. On PC, you might still be able to play a match if you're willing to jump through some hoops, but the console version is basically just a practice mode at this point.

T for Teen: Blood, Tobacco Use, Violence (Online Interactions Not Rated)
It might feel like Monitoring is still around since Blizzard dropped the numbering scheme from the sequel, and occasionally holds “Overwatch: Classic” events that bring back character loadouts from yesteryear. But make no mistake about it, the original Monitoring is nothing more than a corpse at this point. Even more so than any other FPS game mentioned in this article, this death felt even more cynical than usual, with Blizzard essentially killing the old to make way for the new.
Monitoring was lightning in a bottle, and you can't recapture the magic of 2016 in 2026. When it came out, the game was an incredibly innovative evolution of multiplayer shooters that Team Fortress 2with its implementation of MOBA-style heroes that just oozed personality from every fiber of their being. I'm only speaking for myself here – I'm not missing Monitoring but rather play Monitoring 2016. Still, the game should be alive.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (online on consoles)
The best Battlefield game is a shell of what it used to be
On December 8, 2023, EA shut down the servers for a bunch Battlefield games, including Bad company 2. They were also removed from digital stores earlier that year, and can no longer be purchased. These are hardly the only games that EA has been tinkering with over the past decade, and they won't be the last.

7 FPS masterpieces that nobody remembers today
These first-person shooters were and still are incredible, even if no one really talks about them anymore.
Technically, you can still play Battlefield: Bad Company 2s offline single player, which is definitely worth a try. But 80% of BattlefieldThe attraction is its multiplayer, and killing it is effectively killing the game. The delisting also made it unnecessarily difficult to access the single player. On PC, fans have put together Project Rome to allow online matches to still be held, but console players have absolutely no way to play Bad company 2s multiplayer.
Harmony
A legendary cautionary tale
Say what you want about Harmony and its two-week stumble, but it certainly managed to etch its name in gaming history. It has become the definitive example of a poorly thought-out trend chaser game entering an oversaturated market with nothing new to offer. If Sony didn't immediately get cold feet and instead decided to keep the servers for a year, Harmony would have become just another in a long line of failed multiplayer games, joining the ranks of Violator and XDefiant.
However, Harmony failed so quickly and publicly that it became legendary. Mission accomplished?
