2027 Call of Duty games may break a new series tradition

Important takeaways

  • Sledgehammer Games is leading Call of Duty 2027 and will possibly break from a new series tradition.
  • Contrary to expectations, the 2027 game may not be part of the Modern Warfare franchise.
  • The return of the Advanced Warfare series or something entirely could come in 2027 according to known leaker Hope.

Modern Warfare 3 The studio Sledgehammer Games is reportedly responsible for Call of Duty game slated for 2027. The rumor also suggests that, contrary to speculation, it could mark the return of another Call of Duty sub-series than expected and would thus break a new series tradition.

In recent years there have been reports of Call of Duty publisher Activision after a two-year cycle with the franchise's subseries. According to this plan, a certain subseries – e.g. Modern warfare – would continue for two annual COD installments before being replaced by another. Accordingly, Activision sent two Modern warfare back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023, before moving on to Black Ops for 2024. Importantly, this two-year cycle allows players to carry over items, including operators, weapons, and cosmetics, earned in one game to the next, given that two were part of the same sub-series. However, a new report claims that this release pattern may change in the next few years.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 could actually benefit from an approach the series has overused in recent years

While Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 prides itself on its level of change, the title can afford to use a fragmented multiplayer strategy from other games.

According to leaker Hope's post on Twitter, upcoming posts will be in Call of Duty series for the years 2026 and 2027 will be led by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games, respectively. With one Black Ops 6 sequel is speculated to arrive next year, Hope revealed that the 2026 entry will “probably” be Modern Warfare 4in line with the two-year cycle strategy. When it comes to COD title to be released in 2027, they emphasized that it is not a “Year 2 Modern warfare game” from now on. In other words, this means that the game may not be a consequence Modern warfare title, breaking away from a new series tradition established with last year's Modern Warfare 3 coming soon after Modern Warfare 2 the year before.

Call of Duty may return to a long-untouched subseries

While saying that in 2027 Call of Duty the game will not be a back-to-back Modern warfare post, Hope mentioned that there are chances that it could be Advanced Warfare 2 or “something new”, although the plan remains “unclear” at this point. In the comments, several fans thought it would be one Advanced Warfare title, while a few others expressed interest in seeing a sequel for 2013 Call of Duty: Ghosts instead. In response to one of them, the leaker said it could “easily” turn out to be a prequel to 2014's Advanced Warfare.

It is far too early to call if the rumor is shaken up Call of Dutys latest series tradition will see the franchise go back to another sub-series or produce an entirely new thing. But in the event that 2027 will mark the return of an old subseries, it is likely Advanced Warfare 2 than a Ghosts sequel or a Endless warfare follow-up. And that's simply because Sledgehammer Games, the developer is reportedly working on COD entry for that year, is the same studio that also worked on the original Advanced Warfare. On the back, Ghosts and Endless warfare was developed by a colleague COD studio Infinity Ward.
