Marvel Rivals is arguably the most popular multiplayer shooter on the market right now. If the player counts in itself is not enough to convince you, the game also managed to stick to more players than any other multiplayer game to launch recently. But it is not only the Marvel factor that makes rivals so popular, it is also the game's technical performance.

The hero shooter runs seamlessly, with much less balancing problems, if any. But the crowning performance from the development perspective must be Doctor Strange's portals. These portals give you the ability to move between two spaces seamlessly and pull off any fantastic tricks without causing any performance problems. A rather surprising game is responsible for inspiration behind this seamless system.
It takes some inspiration
Tieyi Zhang, a senior graphics engineer at Netase Games, spoke on a GDC 2025 panel, revealed that Hazelight Studios It takes two inspiration when the team was looking for ways to even out the performance problems caused by Doctor Strange's portals. With up to two doctors running around and creating portals, it is surprising that the image frequency does not take at all.
“It takes two inspired me,” Zhang explained. “At the same time, this impaired engine game makes two views without catastrophic expenses. [Does] This game do I use some magic that I don't know? The breakthrough comes from discovering the local feature and creating a local player. Adding a local player enables automatically split-screen rendering via remote cameras. “
We followed up with Zhang and asked him about the link between it takes two and Marvel rivals. He replied and said he did not dive deep into the source code because it takes two, but just wondered how the team on Hazelight managed to pull off the sharing screen without any performance problems. From there it was just about investigating how to implement it for Marvel rivals.
Netease previously said that Doctor Strange's portals were an “outstanding” challenge to create. But it looks like Devs figured out how to make them work seamlessly.
