Why Usopp's lies are important to the story

This post contains possible spoilers for One Piece.

Important takeaways

  • Usopp's lies serve as foreshadowing for future events in One Piece, which eventually become reality.
  • Many of Usopp's lies have already come true, which shows how important it is to remember them.
  • Six of Usopp's lies still haven't come true; one involves fighting the Sea Kings in the final battle against Imu.

The Straw Hat Pirates are the main characters in One Piece. Naturally, the story revolves around them. Each member of the crew is indispensable as they serve an important purpose. Currently, the Straw Hat Pirates have ten members, with Jimbei being the newest.

They became a proper crew only after receiving the Going Merry from Kaya. Luffy and his friends help Usopp and Kaya save their island from Kuro's clutches. After Kuro's defeat, Usopp decided to join the Straw Hats and become their sniper. Because of his upbringing, Usopp became a liar. He lies about many things, but they serve a greater purpose. In fact, they are used by Oda as a form of foreshadowing for future events.

Why are Usopp's lies important?

Almost all of Usopp's lies can be considered predictions of the future. So far, many of the lies have come true and as a result are disqualified from being false. Lies don't immediately become truths, but they do take time.

Whenever Usopp lies, fans can expect it to come true in the future. Therefore, it is extremely important to remember all the lies that the straw hat sniper tells. Already, fans have seen many of these lies come true, and with the story of the Final Saga, it's likely that the remaining ones will come true.

Usopp's lies that have become real

The first lie Usopp told was about pirates coming to Syrup Village. Many times Usopp yelled and screamed that the village was under attack by pirates. At first the villagers believed him, but a time came when they realized that he was just a liar.

This lie became the truth in the same arc when the Black Cat Pirates attacked Syrup Village. Led by Captain Kuro, the pirates would surely have destroyed the peaceful village. Thankfully, Usopp's new allies beat them and saved the village.

The second lie that came true was about a fish whose poop was so huge you could fit a store on it. Usopp told Kaya this story to keep her spirits up, as she was constantly sick. This lie came true in the Little Garden arc, where the Straw Hat Pirates encountered a massive goldfish. The fish poop was so big that it was known as Nanimonai Island.

Of course it was fake! I can't lift five tons! I quit after five pounds!” -Usopp

Usopp's lie about the goldfish also mentioned a land of small people who ate huge fish. While the goldfish part came true in Little Garden, the other half of the lie only came true in the Dressrosa arc. The Tontatta tribe debuted in the Dressrosa arc. They were fierce fighters who caught and ate the fighting fish found in the waters around the island. The members of the Tontatta tribe liked Usopp and considered him untouchable.

The Mole, the Dragon and the Cerberus

Another of Usopp's lies was about a giant mole inside the mansion. This lie was about Miss. Merry Christmas, who possessed the Mogu Mogu no Mi, a Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allowed her to transform into a mole.

Usopp also lied about catching a dragon and hunting a Cerberus. The latter happened in the Thriller Bark arc, where the Straw Hats encountered one of Moria and Hogback's creations. The beast looked fierce at first, but Luffy and his friends tamed it in no time. The crew encountered a dragon in Punk Hazard. It was quite massive and could easily wipe out an entire city. Roronoa Zoro took it upon himself to eliminate it, and he did it with aplomb.

The first reward as Sogeking

When Luffy received his 30 million reward, Usopp claimed it as his own, which was obviously a lie. But this lie also became real. Usopp posed as Sogeking in Enie's Lobby arc because he didn't want to face Luffy and the rest of the crew. After the Straw Hats successfully rescued Robin and defeated CP9, the crew members received new rewards. Usopp's new reward as Sogeking was 30 million.

What other lies have yet to come true?

Usopp in Wano

Usopp has spewed six lies that haven't come true yet. These include:

  • Claims to be a brave warrior of the sea
  • A foreign shopkeeper
  • A medicine that can cure everything
  • Has 8,000 followers
  • Battle Sea Kings in the Tranquil Belt

With One Piece in his final saga, Usopp doesn't have too much time to turn these lies into truth. The medicine that can cure everything will probably be discovered by Chopper, who wants to become the world's greatest doctor.

The lie about fighting the Sea Kings is linked to the final battle against Imu. It has been said that the water levels will rise again, which will bring about a change in the geography of the entire world. The creatures that live in the sea will certainly be affected by it, and they may become more aggressive. Usopp's lie/dream of becoming a brave warrior of the sea will probably come true when he fights the Blackbeard Pirates and beats Van Augur.
