The Descenders are a new group of people that were introduced to the story of Genshin Impact recently, and here's what we know about them.
Some of them may only appear in name and story, but their influence sets the scene for many of the events and quests that unfold. One such character is the brave Vennessa, who has had a big impact on Genshin Impact, so let's learn more about her.
Vennessa's origins
Where did she come from?
As a child, Vennessa lived with a nomadic people called the Muratan; they traveled across the land for many years, enduring many hardships and struggling to survive, which made them train and master survival techniques and various forms of combat to protect themselves. It was through this education that they preserved their culture, but that didn't stop Vennessa from learning about Celestia, the supposed home of the gods. Legends like these fueled Vennessa's quest to become a great warrior.
Unfortunately, things turned terrible when Muratan was starved by the beast Ursa The Drake, and they were forced to flee to Mondstadt and were soon imprisoned by the ruling class. Due to their warrior prowess, the Muratans were forced to fight for the pleasure of the nobles, with Vennessa being recognized in the Coliseum; she fought alongside her sister Lind, earning the name “Lionfang Knight” and soon becoming the champion of the arena.

What did she do?
After all she went through, Vennessa was determined to use her strength and skill to free Murata from enslavement. After becoming champion, she was contacted by Venti, who sought her protection while fleeing Barca Lawrence and his clan.
Although Barca recognized Vennessa and chose not to fight her, he used his power and resources to buy and imprison her along with the rest of the Muratan. Venti offered to help free Vennessa and her people, but she remained steadfast in saying that the Muratan would fight and claim freedom for themselves.
While Vennessa remained imprisoned, Barca quickly staged a truly heinous event. He had Vennessa and all the Muratans (including all non-combatants) enter the Coliseum to face their greatest enemy: Ursa The Drake. Fully confident that Muratan would fall, Barca promised them not only freedom, but complete rule over the city of Mondstadt.
The battle began and Vennessa proved to be the strongest among her people, but Ursa was a truly powerful opponent. It seemed hopeless until the mysterious creature Barbatos (orchestrated by Venti) suddenly appeared. With his power, Barbatos boosted Vennessa's strength and fighting spirit, allowing her to finally defeat Ursa.
With their victory and Barbatos still on the pitch, Barca had no choice but to keep their end of the bargain. This event had a ripple effect that led to a full-scale movement to overthrow the aristocracy with Vennessa at the head of the rebellion.
The fate of Vennessa
What happened to her?
The rebellion quickly gained a lot of traction and support from powerful allies such as the Dawn Knight Ragnvindr and the Gunnhildr clan. It wasn't long before the aristocracy fell and Mondstadt entered a new era. To help rebuild the city and bring order, Vennessa founded the Knights of Favonius and became its first Grand Master. She was very active as a leader and member, often retiring to Eagle's Gate for rest and reflection.
Towards the end of her life, Vennessa's childhood wonder came to be. It is said that she was recognized by Celestia as a truly brave and honorable warrior. This enabled her to ascend to the divine realm from the very spot where the great oak tree Windrise now grows. In her ascension, Vennessa took the form of a falcon and became one of the four winds, known as the Falcon of the West.
