Iron is a second layer crafting material i Windrose which can be found on any island that has the Foothills biome. Given that the game's maps are randomly generated, it will be difficult to say exactly where you need to go to find such an island, but if you follow the main quest and defeat the Coastal Jungle boss enemy, you will eventually be tasked with completing an objective that takes place on a Foothills map. Once you have made enough progress Windrose, it's just a matter of looking for the right place to go.

Windrose Iron Locations
When you arrive at a Foothills Island, look for large rock formations jutting out of the ground. These rocks contain either Waste Rock or significant veins of ordinary grade poor iron ore. Note that you must have a copper pickaxe or better to mine iron ore nodes.
In addition, you will also be able to find caves on the Foothills Islands which contains large amounts of iron ore. If you left the Immersive Exploration option for your world on, you will be able to see markers on your map showing the exact locations of points of interest, such as mines, camps, and farms. This will save a ton of time, but at the cost of making the exploration feel less natural. Be sure to bring a bag too, as these caves tend to have hundreds of ores in them.
Immersive Exploration can be turned on or off by going to the world selection screen from the main menu and clicking the Edit button before confirming your selected world save file.
Iron mining tips
First, we strongly recommend that you create a Fast Travel Bell and place it somewhere along the shoreline of the island of Foothills you found. You'll need more than iron ore to craft the second tier of items, and you'll want easy access to the Foothills to get everything you need to evolve. Build a bonfire and a tent or bed near the Fast Travel Bell. There's a pretty good chance you'll get smoked while exploring here, so it's better to be safe than sorry.
Next, when you find an Iron Ore Cave, build another bonfire next to the ores. Not only will this light up the cave, but it will also prevent the Well Rested buff from depleting, allowing you to mine to your heart's content.
Some of the ores in a mineral cave will be on the ceilingwhich is too far for you to reach normally. To get these, get some wood or plant fibers outside, then build foundations inside the cave.
Finally, don't forget to use your ship to store items. If your inventory is full, recall your ship back to the beach and then stow all your newly made iron ore into it. That way you don't have to teleport back and forth to your base just to clear your inventory. Just make sure not to call your ship close to the enemy's. No amount of naval prowess i Windrose will save you from the enemy ship which is much stronger than yours.
