Borderlands 4 is not just a new one Borderlands game — it's the fourth main installment in the series, giving it an opportunity that other spin-off titles in the series don't have. Borderlands 4 would be wise to tread carefully with a concept
One of Borderlands 4's most prominent features also has the potential to be one of its best, but it should still tread lightly with a concept.
Borderlands 4's title suggests that questions will likely be answered
The clearest meaning of Borderlands 4s title means it will probably expand on the series' overall story. Unlike spin-off titles in the series, like Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Little Tina's wonderland, Borderlands 4title effectively makes it a direct sequel to the series' main story, which was left open at the end of Borderlands 3. This implication may seem like a given, especially with the return of characters like Zane Flynt in Borderlands 4but it's still worth noting, because it ultimately leaves it there Borderlands 4s happens to answer some questions left unanswered by Borderlands 3 and the installments before it.
Fate of Lilith and War of the Watcher
An obvious question left unanswered concerns Lilith's fate after Borderlands 3where she sacrificed herself to save Pandora by teleporting away its moon, Elpis, while it was on a collision course with the planet. Borderlands 4 being what it is, one can assume that Lilith's fate will be revealed in this installment, unlike the other title released after Borderlands 3, Little Tina's wonderland. Another story is left unresolved, not by Borderlands 3 but off Borderlands: The Pre-Sequelis the Watcher's warning, which predicted an impending war that has not been addressed. Now, Borderlands 4 has an opportunity to solve that story, which has remained a mystery for over a decade now.
Missed Vault Hunters and Ava's Future
Another big unknown that left many fans scratching their heads Borderlands 3 is the location of some of the series' previous Vault Hunters. Above all missing from Borderlands 3 were characters like Salvador, Axton and Fiona, despite the game featuring many of the series' other classic Vault Hunters. Borderlands 3s Ava, who now possesses Maya's powers and is the leader of the Crimson Raiders, also remains a mystery, especially since she is only one of the few Sirens in Borderlands universe and is therefore likely to play a significant role at some point. It is possible that Borderlands 4 could bring back the show's missing Vault Hunters and also expand Ava's story.
Expanding on Ava's new role would also be a big opportunity for Borderlands 4 to delve into the nature of the Siren, especially after anomalies like Troy Calypso, a male Siren, have appeared.
The Fate of the Destroyer
Anything else Borderlands 3 Largely unexplored was the Destroyer's fate, as it was eventually revealed that Pandora is a giant vault that houses the Destroyer to prevent it from wiping out the universe. However, the destroyer's fate is still unknown, so it may appear in Borderlands 4. It would also make sense, as Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has indicated Borderlands 4s antagonist is something far more “dangerous and sinister” than even Handsome Jack. Although it may apply Borderlands 4's Timekeeper, maybe the Timekeeper is just a step towards the story's main villain.
There are other issues Borderlands series has left unanswered, but it would make sense to Borderlands 4 to at least address Lilith's fate, the Watcher's War, the missing Vault Hunters, Ava's future, and the Hunter's fate. Borderlands 4called for what it is, it ultimately provides an excellent opportunity to expand the overall story of the series, unlike the various Borderlands spin-offs that the franchise has seen.
