The Harry Potter franchise has achieved massive success twice, with the original book series by JK Rowling being a bestseller and spawning an eight-film film series adaptation that brought the stories even further into the mainstream. Although these films were very well received, the final entry in the film series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, was released more than a decade ago now while the first and de facto starting point for all new fans, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stonecame out more than 2 decades ago. As part of a concerted effort to revitalize legacy IP, Warner Bros. announce a new alignment in 2023 after two years of planning, and Harry Potter the series began casting calls for the new adaptation this year.

Many fans are excited about a few things the upcoming HBO series could do differently as an adaptation and are just as excited about an update on it. They got just that at New York Comic Con, where Warner Bros. Television Group CEO Channing Dungey spoke about the upcoming series. “There's not much to talk about right now,” Dungey admitted in response to questions collected via The Hollywood Reporter. “We've got our fantastic writing staff in place and they're doing what they need to do. And casting calls have opened in the UK and Ireland, so the process is moving forward. It's going pretty well.” While these points aren't particularly groundbreaking, Dungey also discussed what excites him about the series, making a bold claim in the process. “It's an incredible dream, honestly, and as someone who's a huge fan of the books, the opportunity to explore them maybe a little bit more in depth than you can in just a two-hour movie, that's the whole reason we're on it this trip.”

This claim about the upcoming series is really bold. It's certainly true that a comic would serve as a superior medium for adapting the books more faithfully in a variety of ways, such as better showcasing some underrated Harry Potter characters and more properly adapt some parts of the franchise's final arc that the movies messed up. However, the films are seen as a very successful adaptation of the books, and have their own advantages over a TV series. Most notably, film budgets generally exceed those of TV segments of similar length, while VFX costs have only risen in the meantime. While the movies basically set the standard for franchise adaptations for kids, expectations for the show will be much higher now. Attempting to remake some of the most iconic child actors in history will also be a trial, and bringing up issues that wouldn't be an issue in a two-hour adaptation will find their way into the mix.

in truth, Harry Potter could have made a lot of money from an animated spin-off before its live-action TV reboot. Animation would be the optimal way to circumvent many of the problems that would plague a live-action series. Since the powers that be have decided to go all in on an HBO series, fans will just have to wait and see how well it's all handled.
