Underrated 2023 Soulslike is officially getting a sequel

During the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja revealed Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember, the upcoming sequel to the underrated Soulslike Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Released in 2023, Fallen Dynasty is a hack-and-slash action RPG set in second-century China during the Yellow Turban Rebellion. Now fans of the first game will be able to jump back into the war-torn Three Kingdoms era with Wo Long 2.

When it launched in 2023, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty received generally positive reviews across the board, although some players mentioned its initial poor performance on PC. However, the game's enemy and boss designs were praised, as was the music. Fans were mixed on the linear level design, with some appreciating its similarity to No, another Team Ninja-developed title, while others desired a more open-ended exploration. And Fallen Dynastys gameplay was praised overall, by critics and players alike. Despite this, the game fell under the radar of many Soulslike fans, perhaps distracted by other titles in the genre released in the same year.

Like its predecessor, Wings of Ember set in the late Eastern Han period of China, at the end of the second century. The land is filled with strife as warlords battle for supremacy, but “a Phoenix rose from the fires of war as a nameless champion.” As such, players will strive to learn Chinese martial arts and use their skills to defeat powerful enemies, both human and demonic. The game is of course still in development, but the Xbox Games Showcase trailer has given a glimpse of the excitement and intense gameplay that awaits.

Meanwhile, the first match will once again join Xbox Game Pass so fans and newcomers alike can familiarize themselves with the story and setting. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty takes about 25 to 35 hours to beat, depending on whether one focuses on the main story or wanders a bit off the beaten path. Completionists will clock in closer to 50 hours, but since the sequel won't be released until sometime in 2027, even meticulous players should have enough time to wring every bit of the game out of Fallen Dynasty.
