A Ukrainian drone training center uses a modified version of the Grand Theft Auto 5 to help users train to shoot down Iranian drones. The GTA 5 mod uses a special modded multiplayer server for the game to train pilots to identify and intercept drones.

GTA 5 Mod Used to train Ukrainian drone operators
Ukrainian drone training center WeTrueGun has launched a uniquely modified version of the GTA 5which aims to train drone operators. The modified version of GTA 5 is aimed at helping users learn how to accurately intercept drones, react to them and lock on to targets while in motion. The simulator, built on the framework of GTA 5 legacy and using the FiveM multiplayer mode, includes new features to detect aerial targets, track targets and realistic simulations of “direct FPV drone impact.” The modded version of Grand Theft Auto 5 is not widely available, limited to a training program for soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

While GTA 5-Themed training gear is a unique addition to Ukraine's arsenal, WeTrueGun offered some clarification on its use. The Grand Theft Auto 5 Mod is not billed as a replacement for conventional training, but is instead used as a less stressful way for pilots to keep their skills sharp. The training center clarified that active intercept crews train with “specialized military simulators,” and that GTA 5 is not used as a core training method for new hires. WeTrueGun also confirmed that GTA 5 software is provided free of charge to Ukrainian soldiers.

The implementation of GTA 5 as a training tool comes as Rockstar prepares for the franchise's next big release.
