The Legend of Zelda movie has finished filming. The film is now being prepared for release on May 7, 2027.
This was confirmed at CinemaCon last night (thanks, IGN), and suggests that everything is on schedule. Filming took place in New Zealand and began principal photography last November. Zelda and Link's cast are the only confirmed cast members at this time.
Zelda has finished filming, but it won't premiere until next May
Perhaps the most impressive part of all of this is not that filming has finished with more than a year to go, but that it all took place with minimal set leaks. From what we can tell, much of the film is being shot on location, and even so, we only seem to have a single instance of unauthorized footage being leaked from the set, which certainly isn't bad considering all the interest in the project.
In the leaks, we got a brief look at Link, Zelda, and possibly Impa, so it hardly gave us any spoilers. Some speculate that actor Dichen Lachman is playing Impa, but this has not been confirmed.
As for the rest of the case, Zelda is played by Bo Bragason, and Link is played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth. We don't know much at all about how these characters will be portrayed, as there are many different iterations of the characters to draw from, but right now most signs point to something more Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom inspired.
In any case, with filming wrapped up it hopefully means we'll get a trailer before the end of the year. After the success of Super Mario Bros. Movie and Super Mario Galaxy Movie, all eyes are on this Zelda adaptation – and given the more serious tone of the games, there's a lot more that could go wrong here. Hell, we don't even know if the movie will have Link talka decision that will prove controversial no matter which path is taken.
The Legend of Zelda movie opens on May 7, 2027. It comes as part of a packed release window for gaming fans, with Sonic 4 in theaters on March 19, and then the second Minecraft movie on July 23.
