IN Jujutsu Kaisenthe Heian era was an incredibly difficult time period to be born in. All the cursed spirits and sorcerers of this time were incredibly powerful, because they needed to survive. Despite this, Sukuna in this era reigned at the very peak of strength, which is why he became known as the strongest wizard of all time.
In the original series, Sukuna was reincarnated and more than lived up to the legend by defeating legendary wizards and powerful Cursed Spirits with ease. Towards the end of JJKhe finally met his match in Gojo. Although they were evenly matched in strength, Sukuna's knowledge and mastery of the basics of jujutsu eventually proved to be the difference, as he was able to definitively defeat Gojo to become the strongest character in the original series.
