The biggest unsolved mysteries of Kingdom Hearts

Kingdom Hearts is a series full of mysteries. Each new item gives more questions than answers, which is why we all love it. Slowly revealing mysteries within the story is a huge part of what makes this series so fun.

But there are a number of mysteries that I am keen to know the answer to. Some of these can be answered in a later game (hopefully Kingdom Hearts 4), but there are others that we probably never get the answer to, and we just have to use our imagination to fill in the gaps.

What is in the black box?

Luxu/Xigbar and the predictors surround the black box in Kingdom Hearts 3.

To say the words “Black Box” to a Kingdom Hearts fan is enough to take them out in beehives. This thing has been teased a ridiculous amount. The master of Masters gave it to Luxu so he could watch it for centuries.

What is it in this damn thing that would make Master of Masters want to ensure that it is long the protection? Not to mention, Maleficent also hopes to get hold of what is in it. If we do not find out what is in the black box soon, I am worried that we will all start to get wild.

Who is item x?

Official art of guilt and ephems for Kingdom Hearts Union X.

Topic X is a girl mentioned in the secret reports from Kingdom Hearts 3, but her identity is not yet confirmed. We know she used to be friends with Lea and Isa, and she was experimented by Terra-Xehanort because she had lost her memories.

In an interview, Nomura confirmed that the subject X is a character that has already appeared in the series, which of course led to fans who rushed to find out who she can be. The most common theory is that she is guilt from Kingdom Hearts X, but all we know is that she is from the past she said, “May your heart be your guiding key”, which is a phrase ancient Keyblade Welfors used.

Who is the true dandelion?

Ava tells Strelitzia about the world and gives her the law.

In Kingdom Hearts X, the Ava was given the role of educating the dandelions in preparation for the upcoming Keyblade War. Among the dandelions, there is meant to be a “real dandelion” – which is said to be a “light seed to be planted in the future.”

Who this true dandelion has not yet been revealed. Right now, the current theory is that the real dandelion is Strelitzia. Her life was interrupted earlier when she was killed by the darkness, but she is now in Quadratum (in the future), which is shown in the Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer. Maybe her fate was to be this light seed in the future all the time.

What is Riku actually?

Riku in Kingdom Hearts 3.

In an interview from the chain of memories Ultimania, useful translated by Khinsides, Nomura makes a very interesting comment about Riku that is quite sincerely keeps me up at night.

Riku's story was about “What is my relationship with the darkness?”, But some things, for example what he is, have not yet been explained.

Um, Nomura, what do you mean by “what he is”? Would you care about elaborate, please? How long do we have to wait to find out “what” he is? It's been so long since this comment was made, and I can't think of anything that would answer this.

What happened to AVA?

Ava stands in front of the fountain in front of Kingdom Hearts Back Cover.

In Kingdom Hearts 3, the predictors meet with Luxu in Keyblade cemetery – all except AVA. Where is she, and what does she do? Her absence is just really suspicious.

She ended her role as the Master of Masters sat – trained dandelions for the Keyblade War and chose the new trade union leaders – but surely she would have joined the other predictors if she had nothing better to do? Again, we have to wait and see if she has been busy doing something special.

How did Riku Kairis Keyblade?

Kairi who holds Destiny's embrace Keyblade Kingdom Hearts 2.

In Kingdom Hearts 2, Riku somehow pulls out a keyblade for Kairi to use from thin air. When did he have time to do it? And most importantly, when did he get the power to make Keyblade for other people?

This is just another thing that adds that Riku is something … other than what he seems, where he is aware of it or not. Rikus' ability to give other keys out of thin air is not quite mentioned again.

Maybe it was only of convenience for the stage, but Nomura is also the guy who gave us a reason why Xhanort is bald, so … maybe not.

What is the corner stone in the light?

The corner stone in the light from Kingdom Hearts 2 on a blue and yellow gradient background.

The cornerstone in the light is only displayed in Kingdom Hearts 2 and is described as a sacred relic that protects Disney Castle from all evil trying to get into it. When you go to the Timeless River you will find out that Disney Castle was formed around the cornerstone in the light.

But … where did Hörstenen come from the light from in the first place? Who did it? How does Disney Castle defend it from evil? There are many questions to ask the cornerstone in the light, and we have very little answers to one of them.

Who are Soras and Rikus parents?

The floor of Sora's bedroom in Kingdom Hearts.

In the first Kingdom Hearts game, we hear about Soras and Rikus parents on the main island. Sora's mother even calls him for dinner. And that's the last thing we ever belong to them. When Destiny Islands were restored, they ever told their parents that they were okay?

Of course, for narrative light, they never have (nobody wants parents to get in the way of adventure), but it is a bit strange for them to be mentioned and then completely sideways. Sora and Riku should at least send a letter or something.

Given what Riku is “not yet explained” I am double curious about his parents. Do they know about Keyblade? What do they know? I have to know what they know!

Who are Master of Masters?

The identity of Master of Masters is easily the biggest mystery in all Kingdom Hearts. In addition to Xhanort, he is now the big bad, the villain behind everything in the future. And we literally know almost nothing about him.

We do not know what his face looks like, what his real name is, whatever. It is all a bunch of mini mysteries that are wrapped in a humongous mystery. Hopefully some of these questions will start answers when we (finally, finally) get Kingdom Hearts 4, but who Master of Masters is will be a mystery for a long time.
