Switch 2 DEV KIT button has reportedly resulted in Nintendo telling studios to send games on the original switch

Nintendo Switch 2 has come on fire during the past week, as people got to try some upcoming games on the console at Gamescom 2025. The Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition had a tough time, with the forward dropping drastically in open areas, while Borderland's 4 also suffered from performance problems.

With Nintendo proudly boasting that Switch 2 can easily run third-party triple-a-game, these back-to-back issues do not inspire confidence. The fact that the console can run Cyberpunk 2077 and Final Fantasy 7 well points on the fact that some studios may not have had enough time with the Switch 2 Dev sets. It seems that Nintendo was aware of this issue and had a strange piece of advice for developers.

Nintendo told Studios to make games for Switch 1 and rely on back compatibility for Switch 2

As reported by the Digital Foundry, developers they talked to at Gamescom that Nintendo had some strange advice when it came to the lack of Dev kits. Many studios claim that they did not have access to the Switch 2 Dev sets, and when they asked if they were simply told to “send [their games] On Switch 1 and rely on back compatibility. “

“There are many developers who cannot get Switch 2 Dev kits, said John Linneman in a recent section of DF Direct Weekly (via Kotaku).” We talked to a lot of devs on Gamescom this year and so many of them said the same things: they want to send on switch 2. They would love to change 2 versions [of their games]. They can't get the hardware. It's really hard. “

With the ability to play third-party triple-A games is one of the Switch 2 outlets, it is difficult to understand why Nintendo has been so selective with its Dev statements. Maybe it was to avoid leaks, but the result is a much larger PR dream than some specifications that leaked. Hopefully, the fire ring and Borderland's 4 can find out their problems before launch, but we cannot help but feel that these problems could have been completely avoided if Nintendo was not so secretive about Switch 2 Dev sets.
