Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2 is finally out on June 25, and reviews have already started pouring in, with many outlets praising the remake for its graphics and gameplay improvements. Nintendo's Star Fox continues the company's hot streak of remakes ahead of this fall's potentially massive Ocarina of time remake.
Nintendo revealed Star Fox for Switch 2 in May 2026, with a quick release just over a month later, slated for June 25. Fan reaction to the announcement was generally positive; however, the game has been the subject of some controversy regarding the new hyper-realistic character designs, to the point that even Star Foxs original character designers had to get involved. That said, Nintendo's remake suite is pretty good, with games like Link's Awakening and Super Mario RPG be huge critical hits, with fans now have to look again Star Fox follows after.

Star Fox reveals cheaper price, but there's a catch
Nintendo reveals that the new Star Fox remake will have a lower price than usual, but not all versions of the game offer the same deal.
Star Fox impresses critics with stunning graphics and improvements to the N64 Original
Before Star Foxrelease date of June 25th, the game's review embargo has been lifted, and so far Metacritic shows a pretty good response from multiple gaming venues regarding almost every aspect of the game. Star Fox currently holds an 81 “Generally Favorable” score on Metacritic, while OpenCritic has it at 82 overall with a 92% Critic Recommended rating. Some of the highest reviews from outlets like ShackNews and CGMagazine praise the game for its excellent visuals and commitment to the source material while improving several aspects of the game for a new audience. Some stores even state that Star Fox should be the “blueprint” for Nintendo's future remakes.

ShackNews (Asif Khan) – Score: 10/10
Nintendo Switch 2 has a blockbuster summer experience that faithfully honors its source material while introducing Star Fox to a new generation.
Vooks (Daniel Vuckovic) – Score: 10/10
Star Fox is the blueprint for how Nintendo needs to make remakes going forward. This is Star Fox for those who have been there from the beginning, and those who are starting here for the first time. Star Fox 64 is iconic, but this is now the definitive way to experience it.
Game Informer (Kyle Hilliard) – Score 8.3/10
This Switch 2 remake is a happy, updated reminder of why the 1997 game is actually very good and fun, but it also shines a spotlight on the fact that we're long overdue for something – frankly, anything – new from Star Fox and team.
Polygon (Giovanni Colantonio) – No official result
Star Fox is another good excuse to revisit one of Nintendo's best games, but it doesn't build on it meaningfully. Fox McCloud remains in the same stasis he has been in for decades now: surviving the Lylat Wars to prove he can follow in his father's footsteps. I understand that. How many more times does he have to prove he's his own fox before he gets to fight his own battles? Give your future kids a war story worth feeling insecure about.
TechRadar (Dashiell Wood) – Score: 7/10
Star Fox is a solid remake of an excellent game, retaining everything that made the original a cult classic while sprucing it up with a new splash of color. Still, it feels overpriced given the short length of the campaign and the unfortunate lack of new content aside from the decently enjoyable, if rather run-down, multiplayer mode.
But not all reviews are very positive. Polygons Star Fox the review states that the enhanced “cinematic” feel of the remake does little to improve or detract from the overall experience, sometimes even removing some of the original game's playfulness in favor of a gritty feel. Meanwhile, CNET's review wishes there was more to do Star Fox than what was delivered, be it new levels or new worlds, instead of it being a fairly straightforward port with new visuals and some gameplay improvements. As a whole though Star Fox is a hit with most critics, although it feels like it could have gone the extra mile with additional features. Fans should take note Star Fox launches at midnight on June 25th, but those on the West Coast can play on June 24th as it's a global release.
With Star FoxNintendo has hit another remake home run, but it ranks slightly lower on the company's latest remake list. Link's Awakening currently holds the crown at 87 overall on Metacritic, while Super Mario RPG has 84. That said, an 81 is a good rating, and it is likely that all fans of Star Fox will want to pick this up. Hopefully, if all goes well, this will give Nintendo the green light for even more Star Fox project.
Of course, there's the looming mother of all Nintendo remakes coming later this year as well The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. So far, fans haven't seen much of the game beyond some CG from the trailer, but it hasn't ended up like that Star Fox discourse seeps in Ocarina of timewith discussions on redesigning iconic items and characters. That fans latch on to Star Fox and Nintendo is preparing for Ocarina of timeNintendo fans will have to wait and see what a remade version of Link's most famous adventure looks like later this year.
